How much does it cost to start a gym?

Like not a home gym but slightly bigger, aka what you would consider a "small gym" with membership costing $10-30 per month per person. I was just wondering. $10,000? $40,000? You guys know a lot more than me.
Hello! I am very sorry that you are reading this page right now instead of posting hilarious comedy on the internet. I'm sure this issue will resolve itself soon.

It would definitely be easiest to answer with more information. What type of gym are you looking to set up? (primary focus/clientele, number of members, etc) Do you already have any equipment? Are you willing to wait/travel for good deals on craigslist and other secondary market sources?

The range of gym and equipment cost is going to range enormously depending on the above as well as a multitude of other factors. If you get serious about it, I'd recommend reading through the thread about OSUDimond starting up his gym. You won't find many more experienced in the equipment flipping game.

If it's a small freeweight gym you could equip it for about $10,000. But good luck getting people to go there.

You should also read tennisfan's thread about opening a gym. It gives a lot of good reasons why one shouldn't open a gym (especially without proper experience, knowledge and preparation).

There are so many factors you have to consider here, so this answer could vary widely. Also, when you are looking at equipment costs running more than 10-20,000, you probably aren't going to get a loan and buy it outright, but will most likely lease it. It's too hard to say without more information. I've got several different plans put together ranging from about 25k to 200k for a small private facility. Commercial gyms in my area can be 4 million or more. Are you going to franchise? What facilities and service will you offer? Also, you may run into taxes or fees that will raise your cost considerably. A close friend just opened his new place last year. The city charged him 20,000 for the honor of having his small business in town.

While it may be worthwhile for the OP to look at that thread, the OP should also bear in mind that OSUDimond has an existing supplement business and personal training clients. He's also done quite well at buying and selling equipment. I think that there's less risk for OSUDimond to open a gym than there would be for someone starting totally from scratch.
