Aside from that, there's more to it than just protein, and if you think about it, they hit everything else dead on. They eat adequate food, similar every day, similar times. They sleep at the same hours every night, for plenty of hours. Beyond food and sleep, there's the motivation, rather necessity in prison, lack of distraction, and whatever else, that makes them never miss a work out. It comes down to a good routine for them, food, including protein, sleep, same amounts, same times, then there's the motivation, which results in them doing what everyone else does to get big and strong, a solid workout routine, combined with a solid diet. There's other factors too, such as prisoners commonly having higher testosterone, or the use of steroids which is fairly common in prisons, and as you know, with those, you could make anything big. Going back to the mental factors, when your life's on the line, as it is in some cases, and you've gotta appear big and strong, or get the **** beaten out of you, you're gonna push yourself, you're gonna lift heavy, you're gonna do everything you can to get big and strong.
So really, there's adequate food, adequate sleep, daily routines, never missing a workout, the motivation, the mental attitude, the illegal drugs, naturally high testosterone, or even just genetics. Just because someone doesn't hit their protein macros, which isn't the case for all prisoners, they've actually got some nice protein-filled food in the right places, doesn't mean they can't get big and strong, and when you look at all the other things that come into play with a prisoner, you start to see how it's done. That's not to say protein's not important, but there's always other things to take recognition of.
They have pretty much nothing to do all day except sit in their cell so of course they are ripped. Pretty much all they do is lift but its true they don't have all their macros and stuff but they have a lot of time to workout.
Elliot Hulse went into this topic on one of his videos, @strengthcamp on youtube. He mentioned that it may be because of the emotional and psychological state that prisoners are in. If you're not big, you're running the risk of more physical harm. In his words, "If I don't build muscle, I'm going to be r@ped by a gorilla." So because of this, your body will produce more testosterone, and as self preservation, your body will start to produce more muscular gains than a person outside who doesn't run the risk of death every day.
I may not have said exactly what he meant, how he meant it, but thats what i remember him saying
if you are in a calorie surplus that includes more protein than what is required for everyday need and provide a sufficient stimulus you will build muscle, aims for X,Y,Z amount of protein is just optimizing growth is all.
"not hitting macros" these guys on average are fed like 5000 cals a day, not to mention the gear in these jails. If your day literally consists of eating, sleeping, and working out, you're going to get big.
