So i'm about 5lb into my cut (looking to lose 10 in total) and my ribs are already starting to poke through... My genetics blow super hard, I have trouble putting on any kind of noticeable muscle and when I bulk I end up getting fatter around my mid section almost instantly, rather than more muscular. Here is where I'm at, 169 vs. 164 at 5'8'' and 21 years old:

What should I do, Reddit? It's pretty frustrating how I've sort of changed my whole lifestyle in terms of eating habits and regular exercising, but I wish I had more to show for it. I feel like even if I bulk using correct macronutrients and logging all my caloric intake I'll still end up fatter and only slightly more muscular after so many months. I have been liftting since late December, started on Strong Lifts and moved to All Pro's beginner routine. I feel like my gains should have been a lot better than what they were, although this is likely due to not paying too much attention to my diet from February to the end of June. Since I started my cut in the very beginning of July, I have gotten hooked on My Fitness Pal and eat very healthily, taking in 165g-170g of protein a day as well as fats and some carbs.
My lifts are as follows: Squat: 180x10 DL: 220x10 OHP: 90X10 Bench: 135x10

Should I continue to cut, or begin bulking?

Ah, a fellow redditor! I guess you copied this from r/fitness or something. Anyway, if I were you I would eat at or close to maintenance and choose a lifting program. No point in cutting unless you want to look like a Holocaust victim. Noobie gains will allow you to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. Hope this helps!

I was wondering if anyone would notice! I really didn't like my BF% at 169lb, hence my desire to cut. The goal is to get to 159 then start bulking again, but I'm wondering if this plan will sacrifice gains and leave me looking kind of terrible. What do you think? I hate how quickly fat accumulates on my stomach whenever I bulk, I can't fit into any of my old pants.

Didn't know what the hell I was doing in 2009 and stopped shortly after Feb, so let's pretend I've only been lifting since late December 2012. I guess long-term goals are mass more than leanness, I want to eventually be a big dude. However, I don't want to balloon along my waistline while putting on weight. I realize that fat gain is inevitable, but it seems to pack on to me far more quickly and in an unsightly manner than in progress pics of other newbie guys I see bulking.

Well I don't know if this helps any but right now I am doing exactly what I told you in the earlier post. It's only been 2 weeks but I have noticed changes in my mass and my bodyfat. Like I said it has only been two weeks so the results have been minimal so far but it looks promising. I wouldn't consider it a bulk as I am losing fat but still gaining weight which I assume to be muscle. You can still gain muscle while eating at maintenance, especially taking advantage of beginner gains. Just eat a lot of protein, lift heavy, and keep your diet in check!
