Hey guys, i was just wondering if anyone has success with supps to help lower cholesterol. My dad has had high cholesterol for a while now (im guessing some of it is hereditary) but has gotten it lower with diet and exercise. Hes still somewhat high though so i was wondering if anyone has had success with any supplements to help out. thanks guys

His levels should continue to improve as his body composition improves. They're a lot of supplements that help though, fish oil is commonly recommended but I would argue krill oil is more effective on an gram for gram basis. The astragalus in our Creignite product also has solid evidence for reducing cholesterol and creatine is a good supplement to have in general. Krill oil is probably your best bet though and should definitely benefit him for starters.

Krill oil works
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15656713
The results of the present study demonstrate within high levels of confidence that krill oil is effective for the management of hyperlipidemia by significantly reducing total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides, and increasing HDL levels. At lower and equal doses, krill oil was significantly more effective than fish oil for the reduction of glucose, triglycerides, and LDL levels.NSCA CSCS

Anything that is low in cholesterol will help improve cholesterol... Seems pretty obvious to state, but eating more grain based foods and limiting your cholesterol intake will be the most helpful thing.
Finding a protein that is cholesterol free would help a ton, as some can have 40-80% of your daily cholesterol intake in a serving.
Everything that everyone said will help, but no one has mentioned PHYTOSTEROLS. Probably the best thing you can take over the counter to help with healthy cholesterol levels.

The human body produces its own cholesterol and will up regulate production to compensate for the decline in dietary intake. Your body needs cholesterol for many systemic functions to operate. Healthy sources of cholesterol like whole eggs have evidence supporting them that they will help improve blood cholesterol levels as well.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18575296
In the majority of healthy adults, an addition of one egg per day to a normal fat diet could raise HDL-c levels and decreased the ratio of TC toHDL-c. Therefore, egg consumption might benefit blood cholesterol.
Relative to other HDL lipids, HDL-cholesteryl ester content increased in all subjects, with greater increases in the SUB group. Further, HDL-triacylglycerol content was reduced in EGG group subjects with normal baseline plasma HDL-C, resulting in increases in HDL-CE/TAG ratios in both groups. Phospholipid analysis by mass spectrometry revealed that HDL became enriched in phosphatidylethanolamine in the EGG group, and that EGG group HDL better reflected sphingomyelin species present in the whole egg product at week 12 compared to baseline. Further, macro****e cholesterol efflux to EGG subject serum increased from baseline to week 12, whereas no changes were observed in the SUB group. Together, these findings suggest that daily egg consumption promotes favorable shifts in HDL lipid composition and function beyond increasing plasma HDL-C in MetS.NSCA CSCS

Statins also carry a whole host of potentially severe side effects and given the OP's father has already gotten some control on his levels it would seem haphazard to begin treatment now. The side effect profile of krill oil is low and there is sufficient evidence to warrant its supplementation for his needs.

Always be sure to run any supplementation regimen for cholesterol or other health purposes by your physician, a good one should be able to give you the guidance and knowledge you need for success.
I like CoQ10 and fish oil for general cardiac health, although as Coop mentioned iForce Heart Help is worth looking at for positive manipulation of cholesterol levels. I believe NimbusTim (or one of his loved ones) had some very favorable results, perhaps you could PM him for more info. IIRC, poison also used it.NOV || Ohio Chapter || Be more, have less.

^This
Plus eating MCT( medium chain triglycerides) also helps lower cholesterol. Best example is virgin coconut oil. For god sake never take statins those are worst than the cholesterol itself.

Statins are the first line of medical treatment besides diet and exercise, and if you look deeper into the research, you'll understand why the "severe effects" are overblown and far between. I'm not his doctor, who is the one who should make this decision, but any HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor will crush krill oil empirically. The decision should really be in the hands of someone with a full patient history (his doctor), because hereditary hypercholesterolemia is tough to beat with traditional methods.

The niacin block on HSL is transient and can be timed in a manner when HSL is blocked anyway (post prandially).
The forum views of statins are interesting to say the least (these ARE the best examples medically). It's actually niacin therapy that, while exceptionally effective, must be foregone because of the side effects.
