Agreed. Seems he sacrificed his epic '11 conditioning for some extra size...I like the 2011 version better for sure.
Also, I know this has been beaten to death but I can't help noticing his neck in the front double bi in 2012...look at 2011, no neck issue, chiseled...doesn't mean anything at the end of the day I suppose but it is somewhat distracting for the casual viewer. Just doesn't have that same overall "aesthetic" flow from a glance with the thick neck...imho...

I thought he was a bit more polished condition speaking in 2011 but I preferred the 2012 version better. I thought he looked to have filled in gaps in a lot of areas.
So, answering your question I say no. But to each his own.
There is no "illusion" being ruined with Phil and his neck. He looked bigger/more complete BUT a bit less conditioned (but still very shapr).

His chest is huge, but from the front in the MM it gets this weird shape that is VERY unpleasing. Compare it to Kai's chest in the same pose. For me, Kai takes that particular MM with hands on hips easily.
Phil should avoid ever hitting it, especially when next to people wider then him, meaning anyone from 3rd grade up.

I am just looking at the way he hit that side chest in 2012 and he seems to have rotated his hand more, which shows off his forearm more and makes his biceps peak less.
I wonder if this was a conscious choice, knowing he wasn't going to out-peak Kai, but playing to his strengths, which would be his forearms and overall thickness of the arm.

He certainly didn't look any different from 2011 to 2012...
I call that peaked out.
Meanwhile - Kai at 11 weeks out is looking stupid huge, making clear headway from last year, and super lean.
