the obesity itself is caused by behaviour. if things caused by behaviour can be considered diseases, then by the same logic, being an ******* is a disease, and so is speeding.

THE CAUSE OF THE SYMPTOM (the symptom being their fatness) is NOT due to any physiological or medical problem. its purely behavioural (lazieness, ect)(i'm talking about for the majority of fatties)

thats like saying that a torn bicep as a result of a bad deadlift is a disease.

A disease is a set of characteristics at some level: macroscopic, microscopic, biochemical or genetic (or a mixture of some or all of these) that takes a person greatly outside what is considered normal and which has some form of deleterious effect on mental, physical or social health.

Aetiological factors do not decide whether something is a disease or not. Characteristics manifested do.

Wrong, obesity is a very contagious disease. And it is spreading throughout the world fast. In 2013, it is extimated that 600 million people world wide are morbidly obese. In 2010(latest data i could find in such a hurry) nearly 3 million deaths world wide were cause from obesity related ailments. That puts obesity at a firm #2 on the deadly pandemics list, right behind Spanish flu that killed aprrox 5% of the worlds population in a matter of 2 years.

I say it is time we quarantine off all that are infected with this deadly disease, so the rest of us don't catch it!

Wrong. There are diseases that cause obesity like thyroid and glandular diseases. But obesity it self , NO. Anyone in the world can get obese if they choose to, is suicide a disease as well?

When I first got into fitness a little, I dropped to 6'3 140 lbs. I don't think I was annorexic but I was eating like prob 500 cals a day (I'm pretty good at not eating, doesn't bother me after a while). I just didn't have the nutritional knowledge and chit though, when I realized you have to eat food to get big muscles I completely changed. I thought you just don't eat that much and lift until your muscles swell up, the concept of adding thick, dense, slabs of muscle never occured to me back then (srs). I just thought you have to pump blood into them and then they prefer to stay like that.

Lots of cases of obesity and annorexia are b/c of lack of understanding of nutrition IMO. Pretty complicated thing and I have a decent understanding of it only because I found it interesting and relevant. Most people aren't exposed to it.

a typical person is so unaware of nutrition though... I always think like "where would I even start".

It's like speaking a foreign language to them, I think maybe they have to see the value in learning it to actually understand.

I feel you, man, I have been in a similar place, and I think you were actually diagnosable ANA at that height/weight/cal level (I mostly ate 800 cal/day when I was ill though eventually it was down to 200... mm celery and 1 mini bagel a day after a run ). Without lifting and sports and actually caring about performance and the ability to see my body as an instrument and appreciate muscles, I would be so, so lost. I actually am quite afraid right now because I'm injured and it brings up the desire to engage in old behavior patterns as I haven't worked out for a few days.

BTW anorexia really is not about how women/men look or want to look, a lot of it has to do with brain chemistry and self-medication. I really like EDBites.com's perspective & all the articles offered.

Can't be sure if before and after pic is same person , no proof. But those after pics sure drive home the dangers of muscle loss happening to someone who wants to lose fat. You can see the muscle has been cannibalised by her own body .

girl that is just like that goes to my gym. not that extreme, but she has lost a lot of weight over the years and keeps on going. she drinks loads of coffee (used to see her at a local starbucks all the time), and uses cardio machine while reading. it's sad.
