check it out man. black belt running it and possibly teaching, and a black belt student teach for sure. as long as the environment is conducive to your learning, then stick with it. Ive been with the same coach since I started 4.5 years ago. I have had a ton of guys come to my school from other gyms, and they are just floored at how awesome our environment is, and they always tell me how lucky I am to have started with such an awesome coach/class. the overall environment is imperative to success.

I think if you're just starting out learning the basics it doesn't matter too much
but yeah the gym environment is a big thing too. i love my gym cause it's small and everyone knows each other and we have no douchebags/egos. we also have a free seminar + brazilian bbq every last saturday of the month which is awesome. tomorrow's will be a half-guard seminar.

well Im leaving for Germany for two weeks, and have been runnin ragged trying to get ready. So that means next to no training. So I took an extra hour long lunch and trained! It was awesome, because all the guys prepping for Masters World this weekend are training in the day. now I have to try to stay awake for the next 3 hours at work.

After a week of some of the best rolls of my life I had an absolutely horrible night yesterday! Couldn't hit any sweeps, submissions, or even pass anyone's guard. Pretty much got destroyed all night. It really is a mind game a lot of the time. I feel like I was in a bad mindset and it screwed me up.

HEADS UP FRAUD ALERT
Jeffrey Bunting or Jeffrey Catlett, student at Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy, purchased a gi from me, and has opened a chargeback with PayPal stating the card was used in an unauthorized purchase.
The case is being reviewed. If anyone knows this scum bag in real life, please contact me, or at least convince him to do the right thing"It won't get better, just different."

white belt here in NYC just started
been training 3-4 days per week... getting incredibly sore and its hard to keep up with my strength training at the gym... all my muscles are not 100% everytime I go to the gym
my advice to new people
try moves - try anything and test the waters dont just hold your guard position etc try different movements, try to emulate people around you, see what you can do. Dont be affraid to ask your partner how he did that, what should you do, slow down, etc.
its better to learn bjj by rolling at 50% rather than 100%, "flowing" is better, at a basic level you need to get the moves down before you actually "spar"

just to add something about the bolded parts, I must emphasize, do NOT go 100% until you have some what of a clue as to what you are doing. Doesn't matter if you are a manmore (huehuehue), you will cross a line and you will get wrecked... show respect, pay attention to your body and your partners movements and focus on learning why something did or did not work, and learn from there.

Hutch, I forgot you trained!
Will have to check this thread out . . . don't know how I've managed to miss it. I don't train bjj specifically, but have done Kempo Jujitsu for the last 16+ years (so we do a lot of striking and stand-up too). Currently on the shelf from a ruptured bicep in February due to an overzealous training partner and an armbar. Should be cleared to pick up training again in Jan. Until then I am rehabbing and spectating.
2nd degree Black . . . should be about 4th by now but life (and bicep ruptures) get in the way.*MFC Elder Statesmen Cabinet Crew*
