I can't start thinking about this again, started reading about it a few years ago and got obsessed and pissed that I'd never find out. There's all sorts of booby traps on the way down and multiple entrances on 3 sides of the island , they figured it out by pouring dye down the hole and watching it flow out into the ocean.
