He's doing seminars in Germany only and said in a recent interview that he won't compete anymore.

He is still huge and working with doing seminars and interviews and what not, but he is no longer competing.

He's a good dude Markus, from what I can gather.

I also wonder about this with other pros.

He looks like he's still hitting the supplements pretty hard. I believe the body has an amazing ability to undo even egregious amounts of damage, but not if you don't give it the opportunity to do so. The retired pros who try to stay big usually are the ones who look the worse. After a point, you gotta accept it and shrink down a bit.

It must be very hard mentally to shrink after decades of being huge. Being huge is almost what defines them in a way. They would also probably lose any motivation to keep working out since the results would be very shallow relatively.

being on BB forum I will probably get crucified for saying this but being smaller, fitter and healthier far out weights the benefits of being 260+lbs of muscle.

I really do question bodybuilding outside of being a pro as just being ppl with self image issues and it does more harm then good compared to other types of training.

Here is my perspective as someone who does want to get to the slightly freakish level. For me, it is a goal. A star up in the sky to reach for and try to achieve. There are certain things I'm not willing to sacrifice for it, but at this point I have the time, means, and lack of other commitments to give it a go. So why not chase after something that gives me fulfillment and satisfaction? As I progress farther with my education and as I settle down, I don't think I'll be able to maintain such levels, but at the moment I'm a single guy going into my first year of graduate work. It seems like the perfect time to spend some me time to do something I enjoy and hell, if I could eventually make a little money on the side then that'd be a great plus.

I know that personally, I find fulfillment in trying to achieve. To reach for something and be apart of something greater than myself. I realize not everyone is that way, but I imagine many people who are driven in this industry are similar. For me, it extends past just fitness. I wish to reach the highest levels of education, to be a stand-up person, and most importantly be a great husband and father. Those higher purposes are what drives me, in the same way that achievements in bodybuilding drive me.

    Sad but understandable!

But think of it this way: what if a bunch of anorexics/bulemics took diet pills and epikac and tried to see who could get up on stage looking the most like a skeleton?

Not hating on you or anyone else in particular. Just adding to the interesting philosophical discussion. I personally enjoy the sport. Not everything has to be logical. Boxing sure as hell isn't good for the human body but damn if it isn't entertaining to watch and participate in.

It out ways the benefits in terms of Health but some people just want to get that freakish level no matter the cost. I wanna be over 260lbs at around 10% which isn't possible without drug usage and I probably won't even be happy then, whether it is self image or just a narcissistic obsession to get bigger I couldn't tell ya lol
