    What is a micro tear?

    Hi,

When you workout, What happens to your muscle fibers?

Can you guys provide scientific evidence that micro tears occur? What is a micro tear? What does it tear? How does it heal? please provide proof. A friend of mine is denying the fact that micro tears occur after working out and thats what causes the muscle to grow.

    Thanks!
    M

The destruction of the micro-filaments (actin, myosin) in a muscle cell that enable it to contract. The destruction of these filaments prevent the function of that muscle cell. A large amount of micro tears in a large amount of muscle cells contributes to the soreness present during weight training and is what triggers the body into producing stronger muscles.

this is 100% factual your friend is a douchebag

edit: when the tears heal they grow back bigger and stronger (like scar tissue) this is referred to as hypertrophy

    Hey, Thanks for replying!

I always though that as well. My "douchebad friend" or lets just call him someone I know, he wants "scientific proof" that micro tears appear. I've sent him countless articles from websites that state what you stated, however since its not "scientific proof" he doesn't accept it.

    Anyway thanks for replying.

His response: "When you workout you stretch the muscle fiber and that causes the soreness" It was something like that. I may not of been 100% accurate.

OP... your friend is an idiot. If stretching muscle fiber is the reason, then we'd be sore from just stretching. I take it he also thinks that muscles grow while you workout?

I agree with you. I'm just seeking some "scientific evidence". Do you know where I might find studies that prove that when you work out your causing micro tears in the muscle fiber?

    Thanks,

I'm just wondering, what is it that gets "torn" exactly? is it the whole fiber? is it the filaments? the myofibrills? or is it the myosin and actin splitting?

I'm sorry, I have have virtually no biology knowledge.
