How much cardio for optimum health

Just wondering how much cardio I should be aiming to get for optimal health (heart etc...) and are certain types of cardio preferred?

Currently cutting (down about 50lbs) and I do 20 minutes of cardio on the elliptical after lifting (20 minutes 3 days a week) and do a lot of walking (getting to work or going around campus) and other activities.

High Intensity Interval Training would be a great option, as well as long distance running. I've always had high respect for people who can run a marathon, or even half marathon for that matter. The cardiovascular benefits are immense as well. You're on the right track though - any cardio helps.

    I agree 100%

You don't need to do much cardio -- maybe 2-3 times a week. Your goal is to make push your heart above its normal rate to make it stronger. HIIT is a quick and effective way of doing this.

There is nothing wrong with long marathon runs -- but most people never make their heart work hard enough to see any real results.
