Any physics brah? Simple concept question regarding direction of motion

    http://media.pearsoncmg.com/aw/aw_0m...td/video4.html

Consider the video demonstration that you just watched. Which of the following changes would make it more likely for the ball to hit both the white can and the green can?

    1. Use a ball that is heavier than the original ball.
    2. Roll the ball slower.
    3. Roll the ball faster.
    4. Use a ball that is lighter than the original ball, but still heavier than an empty can.
    5. None of the above

I'm guessing option 4 but I really have no fuking idea . Pls help.

Well, Quantum mechanics (QM – also known as quantum physics, or quantum theory) is a branch of physics which deals with physical phenomena at microscopic scales, where the action is on the order of the Planck constant. Quantum mechanics departs from classical mechanics primarily at the quantum realm of atomic and subatomic length scales. Quantum mechanics provides a mathematical description of much of the dual particle-like and wave-like behavior and interactions of energy and matter.
In advanced topics of quantum mechanics, some of these behaviors are macroscopic and emerge at only extreme (i.e., very low or very high) energies or temperatures.[citation needed] The name quantum mechanics derives from the observation that some physical quantities can change only in discrete amounts (Latin quanta), and not in a continuous (cf. analog) way. For example, the angular momentum of an electron bound to an atom or molecule is quantized. In the context of quantum mechanics, the wave–particle duality of energy and matter and the uncertainty principle provide a unified view of the behavior of photons, electrons, and other atomic-scale objects.

    1. Use a ball that is heavier than the original ball.

The answer is 5. None of the above.

This is a question on Newton's 1st Law of Motion which states that any object will remain at rest or continue to travel in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force.

In this case the circular board is providing the external force, causing the ball to travel in a circular path, but as soon as that force is removed the ball will travel straight forward at a tangent, no matter what the mass or speed of the ball is.

The ball will always hit the white can.

My physics I is a little rusty, but I'd go with roll the ball slower. Since normal acceleration is tied to omega, which is angular velocity. The formula for normal acceleration is a=w^2 *R or a= (v^2-v0^2)/R, the smaller the speed the smaller the angular velocity=> the smaller the normal acceleration and the less deviance from the original trajectory (the circular wooden platform)

E: looks like the normal acceleration loses its effect after exiting the circular platform, my badger

    Don't anger gynobrah

Also, centripetal acceleration, not even once. I'm pretty sure it's 5 though. My mechanical physics is absolute crap but I think it's 5.

Yep, the answer was none of the above. Thank you bro, really appreciate it. Concept questions like these freak me out because I still don't have a solid understanding of basic physics.

Pls help.
Yo bro, this is to do with centripetal motion. When ball leaves circular motion it will move tangentially. It will always hit the white can

Hope this helps. This type of a picture helped me a lot when I took mechanical physics.

I just submitted it and the answer was none of the above. Arcrp pretty much explained it exactly the way my prof did. I just wasn't sure if changing mass or speed would have any possible effect on the direction, turns out they don't. Thanks for trying to help though.

5, none of the above; the ball will always roll in the motion of the circle hitting what it gets in it's "circular" path.

No worries bro. It gets easier with practice, and application questions like this are the best way to clear your doubts! Keep at it
