Its not that they want to kill it, they want to stop the pain that it is living in. Ive lost a few pets, one was a cat that had been in the famiy for a year longer than me and had always been there... Its not right to make them suffer. Sorry to say it OP, but if it is in pain then the kindest thing to do is let it go.
You will eventually be able to look past it and see the good times you had with it, it takes a while but you will get there. Also, you can provide a home for another dog and give it a good life. Its not replacing your current one, dont look at it that way.
People underestimate how attached to pets people can be, i know the feel OP.

My dog (parents had him before me) named Buddy, beautiful black lab, was 19 when I was 10, I loved him with all my heart.
I was only child, he was my only real friend. Used to sleep on my bed and make me feel safe every night, then my parents put him down.
Didn't know what to do without him.
Dogs really are man's best friend bro.
I have another dog now Lou, beagle, he's almost 11 now, I can tell it's almost his time.
Make the most of the time you have with him,
get another doggy too and try to get a puppy while your dog is still alive.
I got Lou while Buddy was still alive, and he followed buddy around and now does some of the stuff that ONLY
buddy used to do, little tiny things that melt my heart (srs)
Life goes on , chin up bro

My dog passed away a few months ago, right before spring break. I was 17, my dog had just turned 16. She was blind, pretty deaf and also had problems in her hip. In the last week of her life, she could no longer stand so I would take her bowl of food and water and feed it to her that way. We made the decision to put her down, so we set up an appointment.
The day before she was supposed to go in, I went out for a couple hours to go shopping. I got back home, went downstairs and my dog was sitting on the floor a few feet from my room door. I went to pet her, but there was no response. Immediately I knew that she had passed away while I was gone. I went back upstairs, told my parents, then went back down to place a blanket over my dog and then sat on the last couple steps of the stairs. Up until this point I hadn't cried, but here it began to settle and I did.
Like you, my dog had been a part of my life for literally as long as I can remember, and I can guarantee that putting your dog down is much better for both you and your dog than letting him live and suffer. Finding my dog lifeless on the floor, then picking her up to put her in her kennel so we could take her to a clinic was by far the most excruciatingly painful experience of my life. Don't let that happen to you.

Got the same problem with my family, since my mother passed away they really didn't want to take care of my dog anymore in the same way. Since then I've been taking care of her mostly but it's still a problem, especially as my brother constantly search for reasons to put her down. Now apparently there's a new vet in our village that wants to put her down(father asked for it according to my brother - but he said to me he would let her live till she's sick but dunno). So yeah, fighting for her. I really feel for you, I'm so sorry man, I hope it all turns out well!

Ok you just need to think about the quality of life for your dog. Does he still look happy, or is he starting to look sad/weak? We had to put my dog down about 8 months ago. She was 16 years old! It got to the point where her joints were hurting her so much that if we went on a walk during a cold night her joints would lock up and she would just lay down, I had to carry her inside and it just made me ball up crying to see how helpless she was. On top of this she was completely deaf and half blind. Her quality of life was gone and keeping her around any longer for my happiness was just selfish. We took her to the vet and they put her down quietly.
The best thing to do is to mourn for as long as it takes and then get a new dog when you're ready. I know this sounds crazy, like how could you replace a dog with another...well you can't. But 6 months after we put our dog down we found a really cute one at a shelter (thought it would be best to save a dog rather than buy a new puppy). She was only 1 year old and already knew how to sit, shake, and stay. Try and find one that doesn't resemble your old dog whatsoever. Good luck OP, hope this helps. Losing a dog sucks

I wanted to share this nightmare I had 2 days ago with somebody. It's about my grandma that died 1 month ago......So in my dream I was at my dead grandmothers house for a party ( I knew she was dead at the party, I think it was to celebrate her death) so anyway me and my uncle were sitting down watching tv, waiting for dinner to be served In the kitchen, when all of a sudden my stomach started to really hurt, I went to the bathroom. (the bathroom at her house is small) when I turned my head the other way for a second and looked back I saw my grandma in her bed looking deformed. I was in a whole different room all of a sudden. I was about to walk out of the room when all of a sudden she said "Eli get the sheets b**ch" she then kicked out the covers very quickly and walk slow toward me. Her cheeks were rotten and she had an evil grin on her face.(like she had been decaying for a while) It was terrifying. I then ran to the door and tripped, I managed to open the door from the ground but couldn't get up. I looked outside the door and I saw my family in line for dinner food, I tried to yell for help but I couldn't make any noise I then banged on the side of the door and finally my dad came to help. He helped me up to my feet. My dead grandma then lunged at me. I quickly grabbed both of her hands. I was shocked. She had overpowerd me. I think she was trying to suck my face off but before she could my dad blew her head off with a shotgun. And that ended my dream.
I also had a dream last night about her, I was playing basketball in my driveway and I looked at my house to see a person at the window. I had a pair of binoculars with me and when I looked with them at the window I saw her decayed face grinding, staring right at me .Squat 110kg x 6

It sucks bro, but sounds like its gotta be done. I once saw a good quote, went something like "the only reason dogs die so young is so that we can rescue more." Which, btw, if you get another dog, make it a rescue. My family took in a severely abused lab and she's the nicest dog I've met srs. (That may not be the case for all, but there's a lot of quality dogs in kill shelters)
