Squat form - Do you actively push your butt out when first starting to descend?

I know that your butt would obviously stick out when you're in the whole but should you start sticking your butt out as soon as (or even before) you start your descent? I know that a lot of people say to stick your butt out but I feel it's kind of an ambigous thing to say because they don't say when to start pushing it out or by how much. Also, whenever I see people squating in videos they don't seem to stick their ass out at the start of their descent (or at least as much as I do). When people say "push your butt out" do they just mean let it naturally stick out or do they mean to actively stick it out? Or is this just something that varies between powerlifting and normal lifting? Advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Depends on your style and leverages. Raw I sit down, knees out, in gear sit back, knees out.

That's what I've been doing the past couple of months (I've been changing my squat form every couple of months for the past year in an attempt to perfect my form) but every video I watch says something different which has really been confusing me.

If I get carried away with pushing my butt back, I wind up on my toes and wind up having to really fight to get the lift.

I try to initiate the movement with my hips but have the bar travel in a vertical line.

I'll mess up on my last one or two reps and overdo the butt back part. It's a mental thing for me, it's getting better

You really want to keep your hips under the bar as much as possible. That being said your butt should not come out your first movement should be breaking at your hips and push your knees out hard on the way down and even harder on the way up!

Take a look at the top unequipped squatters. You'll find many different styles and techniques. You have to find what works for you. Just don't go changing everything at once. Modify one little thing at a time until it finally feels like you've hit your grove. As you get stronger, bigger, fatter, !whatever things may change and again keep trying small little changes. Even the top lifters look for ways to optimize their leverages and strengths while brining up weaknesses.

sorry to sound thick, but can you explain breaking at the hips but not butt coming out? probably something I do (push butt out) and I notice the weight pushing me forward so im pressing up through the knees as another poster mentioned.

Over rotation of the hips is bad, try and tuck them under abit if your back has got a huge arch in! normally a sign of tight upper ham strings and poor abdominal stability strength!
