They did that on purpose. It gives the Bruins an extra man on the ice and they only do that when they're in desperation mode. Funnily enough, the Bruins actually invented that this year after they finally read the rule book, which allows a team to pull their goalie and replace him with an extra skater.
It's hilarious, how after all of these years, no one thought to actually read the rule book. They had a ton of time to read the rule book during the lockout and waited until game 7 against Toronto to reveal the strategy to the world, and it paid off big of course after they scored two goals in the last minutes of the game to force overtime.
The more you know.
edit:
Actually, I'm wrong. A quick Google search revealed that the first team to do this was actually a Boston prep team this winter and, for some reason, this strategy remained quiet around NHL circles. Leave it nerds to actually read the rule book, eh? The only reason Boston found out was because one of the players on that prep squad mows an unamed Bruins player's lawn in the North End. Apparently, they've developed quite the mentor/mentee relationship.

I wouldn't have minded trading for him if the Kings were willing to take D prospects for him, which they don't need. There's no way Lou would trade Henrique, Matteau or the 1st for him, so the deal never made any sense. He also won't buyout Hedberg, so there was never an NHL spot for Bernier anyway.

Claude on Bergeron (source is weei)
Rupture spleen but listed as day to day.
“Guys, day-to-day is really good news to me, anyways, should be to you guys.”
Julien made one more reference to Bergeron when asked if Bergeron’s availability would factor into continued playing time for Carl Soderberg on the second line with Brad Marchand and Jaromir Jagr.
“What does day-to-day mean? I don’t know if he’ll skate [Monday morning],” Julien said of Bergeron. “He may, and that’s what day-to-day is. I’m trying to be as clear as I can here. At the same time, I like Soderberg’s game. Anybody who knows that this guy hadn’t played in two months and played the way he did should be impressed. I know I was. He had good jump. He had no fear
