An airplane is on a powered conveyor belt. The conveyor belt can increase in speed to offset the rotation of the wheels, thereby preventing the plane from moving. Will this airplane be able to fly in this situation?

yes - a stationary plane will fly.
just like if you jump while you are in an airplane, you will shoot out the backside of the plane b/c you are going straight up and the plane is moving at 500 mph underneath you.

"So there I am sitting in the waiting area of the hair salon with my niece and Keanu Reeves walks in. I was nervous as ****, but too scared to say anything to him. Then my niece started crying, and I’m trying to quiet her down because I don't want to bother him. Pretty soon he walks over and asks what's wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry. He put down his magazine, picked up my niece, and lifted up his shirt, and breastfed her right there in the salon. Chill guy, really nice about it."

HERE IS THE LEGIT ANSWER
In a perfect world where the plane and the belt are the exact same speed at the same instant and there is no wind= no fly, no lift
The world is not perfect and the belt will not match the plane at every instant= thus lift, possibility of flightMisc Firearms Crew

Yes, airplane propellors/turbofans move the air unlike a car where power is applied to the wheels. Wheels in a plane are free rotating, its impossible for the conveyor to restrict the planes motion since its moving the air, not the road like a car.
Airplanes move by applying power to the turbofan, creating thrust, cars move by applying power to the wheels, which "move" the ground. The wheels of an airplane are free rotating, there's no power applied to them, airplane motion is all dependent on thrust, the conveyor can't stop the motion of air through the turbofan, so it will still accelerate and eventually take off.Last edited by DBoss11; 05-30-2013 at 01:30 PM.
