My calorie intake needed to maintain weight is about 2,500 (not too sure how accurate those calculators are). I've been eating at around 3,000 calories a day for about 2 months, and noticed very little progress. It makes sense, I don't think your going to gain a lot of muscle if you're only eating 500 calories above maintenance. That is like saying "Eat like you normally would, but add in a few glasses of milk". I bumped up to eating 1,000 calories over maintenance, and am finally starting to notice a difference. Every scale I have is on the fritz, so I can't accurately judge how much I'm gaining.
Is eating 1,000 calories over maintenance while bulking common for guys who have trouble putting on muscle or is that too much? By the way I'm 6'0, and about 158lbs.

Eating more than 500 calories of a surplus will be more on the side of fat gains. Your maintenance is probably a little more than 2500 which could be the reason you aren't gaining weight. You should just experiment and start from an amount of calories and if you arent gaining you up calories a bit each week or if you are gaining too much drop calories each week. But you shouldn't be getting a 1000 calorie surplus imo because it will 3/4 fat gain.

Cool thanks a lot, I'll give that a shot. I definitely want to avoid putting on too much fat. One more question, when you're measuring body fat percentage, are you supposed to like inhale and flex your abs when you measure, or exhale and just let your gut hang out? I noticed there was around a 5 inch difference between the two.
