I always find it funny when people who work 40+ hours a week think they are superior.
At my old job I would occasionally put in the 50 hour week and it was ****, you add the commute and it left no time to live an outside life. Girl I was dating at the time would always complain I had no time for her and I was like I don't even have time for myself. And the little time I did have I was mostly exhausted from work and just wanted to lay on the couch, not go out on dates.
40 hours sucks, but it is doable. Any more than that and quality of living drops off radically. If you want to sacrifice your years for money, go ahead. If I'm at a job and they want me to work over 40 hours a week on a regular basis, I am leaving that job.
I suppose if you have no hobbies, no outside interests or no outside people in your life go ahead and work all you want. The D.E.N.N.I.S. system:
Demonstrate value
Engage physically
Nurture dependence
Neglect emotionally
Inspire hope
Separate entirely

Came into vent. I agree so much with this. I am currently working 50-55 hour weeks. only a 30 min commute each way which aint too bad, but commute on top, thats 55-60 hours week, working and travelling back and forth to work. I always feel tired at the moment, it sucks. I am dating a girl but often feel exhausted and never up for big nights out anymore and just don't have energy for much. Just depressing feeling this is my reality and I won't break it anytime soon unless I choose a different path in life.
On week nights, realistically at most I go the gym or for a run. Socialising as such isn't really a possilbility, and the occasion where I do drink mid week for example on a thursday, always ends up with me being exhausted on friday. Guess if the money is great it is easier but in my profession the money is not good either (at the moment) at least. Brahs working in IB at least start on a good salary that makes that immediate slavery time somehow more palatable.
The hard thing is that exploring other options takes time and money that you don't have. So it makes it harder to 'escape' the 9-5. You just dont realistically have the time or the money to explore other options. If I had 2-3k (GDP) saved up in my bank, hell, I would probably be ready to quit now and do something different, but the lack of saved up money means you get trapped.
I would be happy to do something more on the handyman path. Something where each day I am travelling around the city, maybe fixing things, going to different houses, having some variation. Something where you are not always working the exact same routine day in day out for months and years on end. Would be nice to have the freedom and flexibility so I could take more time of from work, go travelling for say 1 month, 3 times a year. I could put my work on hold and at least have some little adventures to look forward to. Otherwise, it just feels utterly soul destroying sometimes. Basically having your own company is key, like a taxi firm, or a air conditioning installation company or something. These are just random examples but seems the only way out is to take control of your destiny by becoming your own boss.

I did laboring for my dads electrical company and now have a office job and its much better. Feel lucky you aren't doing a ****ty labor or manufacturing job.
I believe office work is what you make it. I have moved up where I work and flirt with the young girls in the office and make friends at work. I imagine it would suck if you kept to yourself and did socialize at all rather sat there for 8 hours and just worked.

I look forward to it. I spent 10 years of my life slaving away in a mill 8 pm to 8 am, and even did a year long stint as swing shift day/nights till too many people got hurt and they went back to a normal 12 hour day shift. (The swing shift was like 4 days, off 3, 4 nights, off 3, 3 days, off 1, 3 nights, off 7)
BRB never being able to have a normal life working 12 hour shifts in a mill at night, when my gf's usually work 9-5 and I'm stuck watching TV all night in bed because I cant go to sleep because I just woke up at 4 pm. BRB never being able to enjoy anything with my future kids.
I started back to college in 2010, I am now 8 classes away from a Bachelors; I took a voluntary layoff after struggling to go for a year working 12 hr night shifts and sleeping 3 hrs a day. I personally cannot wait to work 9-5 and have a normal life.

9-5 crew checking in
if you dont like it why dont you leave? i've worked at some pretty shtty jobs. places where i felt i'd blow my brains out if i had to do this for the rest of my life.
dont mind my current job tho; i work for a realtor/business owners right hand man. keeps things pretty interesting & i usually learn a lot from him.
my schedule is very flexible, i COULD work 40+ hrs if i wanted to, but most times i like to keep it between 30-40 (cause of school). having worked 50-60+ hours before, i love it so much more. sure, i might not make the same amount of money, but nothing beats having time to live your life.

Currently on dat 9-5 time and sometimes i complain but then i realize others have it way worse than me.
My commute is 5 mins. I have flexible hours so if I want to sleep til 10 and work 10:30 to 6:30 my boss won't care
my job is sales-related so if i'm hitting my goals, nobody bothers me about what time i leave, etc.
But i still wanna leave this behind next year and travel the world, make money off my websites and trading stocks, etc. But i try not to take it for granted when i know other people commute further, make less, and have way more stress @ work.

Agree!
I left a cushy office job (with average pay) because I hated the fact that certain people would dangle the idea of long overtime hours on the spur of the moment... It rarely happened, but it bothered me that they had the power to take away my free time on a whim. Wasn't worth it for me.
I also feel sorry for the dads out there who rarely see their families and work extreme hours to "support" them. Obviously it's an ego thing because they could work a lot fewer hours, and have more time at home, but in that case they couldn't drive an Audi and buy their spoiled kids the newest of everything.
