Just got done riding.. Fcking beautiful day brahs. Jumped on the bike and just started hitting country roads... Did this for like 2 hours and started to think "oh chit I bet I need gas soon" and then what do you know... Fcking low fuel light starts flashing and I was lost lmfao. So I called my bro (he knows all the fcking roads) and asked him where the closest gas station was haha. Leads me down a road, which ends up being closed because of high water..
Long story short, he remembered the road was closed and I was already on the bike when he called me so he headed out to find me and lead me through some country roads to get me back to town.
Other than that, I fcking loved it. Drove on a lot of roads that had trees covering it up so it was kind of like a tunnel. Just had to watch out for the turns that started right after a hill. Best $10~ I've spent.

So the economy is slow, insurance is high (on every bike), and buying a new bike these days isn't very practical. At the end of the day a motorcycle is still a toy to the vast majority of people. If you go outside and ride for the day or go to a bike meetup, the majority of SS bikes you will see are still 600cc bikes. Young people who are the primary buyers of a 600 bike, haven't been as wealthy as generations of the past. People have been forced to go with the used market or maintain what they have instead of buying new (thus motorcycle sales down as a whole). 675 and 636 have been around for a while and the 636 took a hiatus. These bikes are still in the "600 class". The 636 is a marketing ploy by Kawasaki (look at us, we are different, it's still an i4 636 that's 20lbs heavier). Triumph acknowledged that the Japanese big 4 already had the I4 600 class covered, why do the same as everyone else in a competitive Market. The tripple has another 75cc to compensate for losing a cylinder. Ducs and other twins(or V4) get extra CC to compete in motoGP (1000 I4 vs 1200 v4/twin)
Suzuki is still showing that the I4 600 can dominate the the class. I disagree with what the article is trying to push, the base 600 class isn't going anywhere, it may look different at times but adding 36cc (inb4 they go back to 600 next gen). The 250/300 has always sold well, but they won't make the 600 go out of business. People will always want more power

I disagree with your stance on the matter. I see the class going up for more power or down for less price to pick more of a niche crowd who either buy their bikes for gas/commuting or like the speed/thrill. And the 636 hasnt been around for a while, the 675 came out in 06 compared to r6 in 99, gsxr600 in 92 and zx6 in 95.
the 250cc class has been a overall good seller but the 250cc SS hasnt always sold well which is why kawi was the only one that had it for years, there was no cbr 250 gsxr 250 or R2.5 lol (in the states atleast)Will rep fellow military bros

The 636 came out in 2003. 10 years ago. It was gone 07-12. The 600 class is a great combo of power and fuel economy. Insurance kills the liter class for young people, yet we all graduate (or think we do) from the power of a 250-500. It will be interesting to see how the cb500r does, but I'm afraid it will end up like the ninja 500 or gs500

250s have no place on American roadways due to the size, width, and traffic on said roadways. It also doesn't bode well with conspicuous consumerism ever so rampant in American culture. They're slowly but surely being shooed away with these new 300 & 500cc bikes. In a decade I think we'll see a complete overhaul in the "normal classes"... no longer 250-650-600-1000 like it is today. Suzuki has always been an outlier in the 750. We're already screwing around with the 600 class now

I've been on the look out for a 750. I gave up on getting a good 636 with the experience I had on one.

Hey gentlemen, I'm going to be picking up my first motorcycle in a week or two most likely on craigslist. I found a pretty good price on a 1999 R6, but i'm not really sure what I should be looking for when it comes down to checking out if it's sound and all that. Any advice on what to check for would be greatly appreciated.

Actually got it for you..
1. Free vin Check via - https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud...check/vincheck This site will tell you if the bike has or is stolen and if there is any major insurance claims on it.
2. Fork Seals - Hold front break and pump the front suspension. Touch the fork seals if it is oily or greasy there may be a leaky fork seal. Will cost a bit to fix.
3. General Appearence - Check all fairings, if its cracked check for damage under the fairing itself. Look at flame sliders for any evidence of it being dropped.
4. Tracked/Raced Bikes - Check oil filter plug, if theres a little hole in it then its probably been tracked. If it's been raced look for drilled holes on calibers.
5. Chain and Sprockets - Check sprocket condition, make sure nothing is blantantly wrong with the sprocket. The chain shouldn't be very lose.
6. Tires - check for flat spots and tire pressure.
7. Engine sound - Put your head by the engine and listen. There may be a bit of ticking, but it usually doesn't mean anything bad. Excessive ticking or knocking/banging is a bad sign. Check RPMS and make sure they are even aren't jumping while in idle.
8. Rev it up - After warming it up, rev it up. Check for smoke coming out of exhaust, black smoke is usually not a good sign.
9. Blinkers - Check all turn signals.
10. Gas tank - Open it up, use a flash light and check for rust in the tank. Visible rust = clean the whole tank.
11. Brake Rotar/Rims - Make sure there is no dents in the rim.
12. Take off passenger seat and main seat - Make sure subframe is in good conition, check for any unsual wires or damage internally.
13. Check Oil - dont' buy a bike with milky colored oil!...

Cover the exhaust for a quick second while the bike is running. Will expose any exhaust leaks.

fork seals are like a 2 hour job including removing and re-fitting them so not to bad and seals are a few £ not really costly just a bit daunting

Not something any average rider can do with normal tools. Also depending what type of forks you have make it easier/harder to do and can be a very expensive mistake when one is made. on your 400 (not sure what kind im gonna guess drz) I am sure they are not super complicated forks.
Add to 3, levers/bar ends very clear indication of drops. Caveat to 4 is a tracked/raced bike really bad thing since most people who race take ridiculous care of their bikes and will come with tons of spares.
To 7 I wonder what you would say if you heard an SRAD run if you thought it was running well. 8 add blue/white smoke. 11 ROTORS

Cheeky kent. I wound up first going southeast into Indiana. I had to stop for gas at some sketchy gas station in Gary. Got out of there ASAP and went back through Illinois and up into Wisconsin. Found some curvy roads that made it a lot more enjoyable. I'm now thinking I will get up early on Friday morning and tackle the Wildcat Mountain run. Will be a good 8-9 hour ride there and back, with stops and all.

Sweet, bro. Pics of girl? Pics of mountain?
Cool story bro. I love when rides turn scenic. The only downside is it provides distractions.
Sounds like you got a lot done.
That bike is sexy. It's such a shame they stopped making them. I have heard of some issues but Buell was designed to be user friendly as I recall. Please let me know how you like it down the road.
*edit*- great, now I am thinking of picking one up. Lots of good deals in just a 2 minute search lol.
Question for you all:
How important is keeping a clean bike to you all? Is there a benefit other than aesthetics?Last edited by CHOOSE; 06-08-2013 at 08:50 PM.
