I'm having some trouble with my grip lately. I'm good up 'til about 495, but when I go for a 545 or 565 pull the bar will drag on my fingers. This has been ripping the skin off the inside of my ring fingers (both hands). They gain pretty decent callouses, but they'll still rip off.
First Q: How much are you supposed to use your thumb, and where? (Beside the first finger? Down on the first and middle finger?)
Second Q: How do you care for callouses? Rub off, or build?
Third Q: How do I strengthen my hands' skin?
If there's any other grip tips I'd love to hear them too! All help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
SBHayes

Don't hold the bar in your palms when you pull. It'll pinch the skin (where you're forming callouses) and form callouses more. Instead, grip the bar higher in your hand (towards your fingers) by resting the bar on top of your callouses or right in the area where your fingers meet your hand.
But regardless, callouses will form. As said above, use a pumice stone in the shower after your skin is soft on a rest day.
Edit: didn't read OP carefully. Seems like you're holding the bar correctly. So I, too, would say just try to keep the callouses managable with a pumice stone.Last edited by JamesMontana; 05-16-2013 at 10:39 AM.

It's already been said... Pumice stone. Maybe warm water and razor blade.
You should also strengthen your grip. Ironmind is a good source for hand grippers. If u want a cheaper way to get a stronger grip, then just throw a towel or two around pull-up bars. Do towel holds for time and pull-ups that way. Another idea is to cut PVC pipe to about 25 in length and put black gorilla tape in the center and then to the right and left of it. Make your own thick dumbells and save $. Tape it precisely around 5 times. If you have gorilla hands wrap it 8The only wars I like to see are iron wars in the weight room!

Ask your hands if they have a few minutes to talk. Sit down with them and give them a stern talking too about how important their function is when deadlifting. Tell them to stop half assing it and to get their $hit in gear. I did this a couple years ago and have had zero problems since. Well, I had to foil a couple of murder attempts they had plotted against me, but at least my deadlifts got better.
