I forget specifically which countries, but many have worse punishment. I believe the UK = 1-2yrs work release or something. Turkey = walking barefoot 20mi thru desert. Ecuador= execution on the spot....
Now in California if u get Even one dui, u have to drive with a license plate that labels u as a drunk driver.

if it's such a problem then why just slap drunk drivers on the wrist and give them a fine etc
screw up multiple times you get party plates etc. the whole system right now is EXTREMELY lenient and kind of a joke, people still drunk drive because they can afford to.
you bet your ass it would cut drunk driving by a **** ton if you straight went to jail for a few months for doing it.*Reps back*

If anything they should up the legal limit to .10 and increase the punishment vastly.
-Would lower the DUI offenses for ppl that were just at the limit and who were driving fine
-would punish harshly the ppl that were acting reckless by driving at like .15 or above
-would deter ppl from driving with anything more than 2-3 beers as they know if they get caught they are fuked.
BRB lower DUI cases, but increase ppl learning their lesson and never driving drunk again.--------------------

I don't see the problem with this recommendation.
Raise your hand if you can accurately tell if you are .06 or .08 BAC.
Really wish texting laws were more strongly enforced too. Its not even a primary offense in some states.
Posters do have a point that drowsy driving is probably as if not more dangerous than .05, but there isn't much that can be done to enforce that law, so it's a moot point.

This is kind of why I don't really want to see something like this happen. This literally does nothing except catch a few more of those unfortunate people who just had 3-4 beers over a few hours and decided to drive home. I just can't really see someone swerving into oncoming traffic and plowing into someone after 2 fukin beers.

first thing I want to address is that you should not be drinking and driving.
second thing is that if you are pulled over for drinking and driving tell the cop you do not want to contract with them and ask who the injured party is. there will be none. do not give them a drivers license or insurance and if they say they are taking you to jail tell them your fee is $100,000 per hour or part thereof for you to comply with his request (even though you're under duress). otherwise it would be kidnapping because the officer has no jurisdiction over you because you refused to contract.

As I've said in these thread today, cops rarely see any observable behavior below .08-.10. That is why so few DUIs are given for BAC's that low. Its nearly always the .15-.20 and higher that get busted.
The only people who will be caught by this are during fishing expeditions (illegal checkpoints, license plate lamp out, etc).
As for drowsy driving, where are the lobbies funneling millions into govt and PSAs? Oh wait, its not about safety to begin with. Its about $$. Shocking.
Again, I never drive after drinking FFS. The lack of logic just rustles my johnsons

Despite the lack of observable behavior, there is plenty of evidence that motor functions are impaired before you get to .08.
Yeah, this law wouldn't stop the dumbasses who will drive no matter what, but it would reduce the 'I'm ok, I just had a few' drivers, which is a risky bet and would increase safety.
Back to the drowsy driving, even if there was billions in lobbying on the issue, what can be done about it ? My point is that it is dangerous, but we don't have the means to enforce any law regarding it.
I don't think that we are on different sides of the issue, you are just a little more cynical than I am. (and trust me, I don't think that the government always has our best interest in mind - just that this issue would have safety benefit and is not just a move to increase revenues to the states)

just like how gun control didnt stop the criminals who would do shootings.to bad this is america and the responsible people get the shaft because of the people who arent responsible(because at the end of the day,the drunk drivers will still drive drunk regardless what the dui limit is.so we can all have fun with more laws that screw over the responsible people)

Obviously you know nothing about what's involved in getting a DUI. I just got a DUI (blew .10) so I'll tell you what to expect. No license for 6 months (or more depending if you blow over .17), DUI charge is $500 fine (could be more in other places), the COURT COSTS are $200 more (Per ticket, I got paraphernalia too so that was $200 x 2), Attorneys are about $2,000 to help you through this situation, I've had 5 driving privileged sheets printed out so $20 x 5 = $100. DUI classes (which is the optional choice as opposed to paying $60 a day to sit in jail for 3 days) are $400. License reinstatement is $425. I think I'm sitting at about $4,000 spent at this point. Not to mention the fact that you look like a piece of **** in front of your parents and other peers, need to bum rides to get ANYWHERE (my friends are annoyed as fuk coming to pick me up all the time, only been 3 months of no license 3 to go), and this mark on my record could cost me a lot of opportunities down the road. After having gone through this, I'd say the punishment is overly severe in some cases (like mine). If you blow over a .17 you get it even worse, and if you get 2 DUI's within 5 years I think? You also get it even worse.
