When you do carryout at a restaurant like Applebee's or Denny's and you go in to pickup and pay, do you ever leave a tip? Personally, I don't. What is the tip for, handing me the bag? But sometimes they make little comments like, "will that be your final total?" when paying with a card. Umm. Yep. Other times they just look at you with that little entitlement look that is so popular today. I just look back at them.
Do any of you actually give a tip in this situation? I can understand if they bring it out to your car, but I mean if you go in and get it.

In this situation, no. My ex-wife was once a restaurant waitress, and she and I worked out the scenarios for tipping, to which I still mostly adhere.
One thing is guaranteed, though; if I've got a $25-30 bill - anywhere - and I hand the waitress 2 20s and she asks if I want change, her tip will be less than originally intended."An infraction is better than an infarction."

Some cheap basterdz in this thread...
Tip the maids when you stay in a hotel. 5% of room stay or so.
Tip the bug man 10-20 every time he comes out so he hits all the areas extra well.
Tip the captain on a fishing trip.
Tip the golf boy who cleans clubs, loads/unloads.
Carryout gets 10-15%. Want extra butter, ranch dressing, rolls, etc? They remember and will fuark you next time, or heap gobs of free whatever on you.
I'm not rich, probably poorer than most in this thread, but having spent SOOO many years in service work when I was younger, I tip everyone I expect to do repeat business with and I find it more than pays for itself.B: 285

If it's a regular server who has taken the order and brings it to you, a tip is proper, just as if you were eating in. They do at least as much work putting the order together for carry-out as they do for sit-down. For the amount of time they are spending putting together a to-go order in the kitchen, and not taking a table which will tip, they are losing money. I'm speaking about how a diner/restaurant works (friends in the business). A Denny's, Applebees or Chili's might have take-out staff who do only that. In that case, if it's a matter of the host or hostess entering the order and handing it to you, I wouldn't tip. I don't tip at Dunkin' Donuts or the smoothie bar at the gym either, but I do tip the diner waiter or waitress for a to-go order, and the delivery guy if I'm too lazy to go pick up; he's probably using his own vehicle.

I tend to over-tip the wait staff I know. Word got around the diner, and if I get a different server, they tend to trip all over themselves waiting on us, so they get a good tip. The waitress who worked the diner counter and I were talking about this. Her words exactly: "we remember". My ignorant s-i-l once left $3 for a $70 table order. My partner and I are regulars, so everyone knows us. This is the place where I'm an honorary Greek. He was mortified because the staff knows who she is, and word got around. He ripped her a new one for embarrassing us like that, though it was out of ignorance. Some people simply don't know how to tip.

If I am being served, unless you royally screw up, I always over tip. When I go back they already know what Im drinking, the speed I like to get each course and they let us eat in peace. The reality is the amount of money tipped in really nothing in the grand scheme of things, but it could be a lot for someone that needs it. If Im picking up- no.

Came in hoping for this, dissapoint
However, in regards to the original q- Screw them. Tipping is for waiters/ servers. They make waaaaayy under minimum wage and the tips they make are supposed to bring them up to minimum and possibly way above minimum wage if they are good at their job. The jokers working the cash register make at least minimum wage. They do not have a tip based salary, so a tip is not required, nor is it needed.Lift light until you can lift right

OP's probably got me on Ignore () so for the rest of the posters, yeah, I tip. Barber shops, bars (on very rare occasions), restaurants...I tip. I tend to overdo it, as my late father did, and as my sister still does. I'm not rich by any means, but I believe good service should be rewarded even if I'm not a repeat customer as Dru D with the cool car mentioned.
Funny, growing up, I always heard Americans were bigger tippers than Canadians and that Canadians tended to be sort of cheap. My father was from Toronto and he always tipped big. Maybe that's because he grew up poor. My late mother was American and tended to be on the cheap side at times. Loved them both, but I could never understand my mother's 'tude about tipping. I used to be a waiter years back and it was a rough business. Feast and famine, so I well understand how providing good service can make a difference between a very good evening and a very bad one."Don't call me Miss Kitty. Just...don't."--Catnip. I live in a small town and when we do put in a carry out order it's to a place we frequent as sit down customers. I tip the waitress (usually a college student) a buck or two for packing the meal and drinks.
FYI, most restaurants give those orders to the low waiter/waitress in the pecking order who are making below minimum wage." ----------I`m your Huckleberry......'"

Trying to be tactful here, I think WhiskeyJack was attempting to say that the servers should NOT automatically expect to keep the change. When I was a waiter, I never asked such a question. My manager told me and all the other servers no matter how much they give you as the initial payment, we were expected to bring back the change and let the customer decide on how much to leave. Attitudes have changed, yes, but having been on both sides of the equation, I can understand his feelings on this matter."Don't call me Miss Kitty. Just...don't."--Catnip. I tend to tip everyone 15% regularly, 20-25% on excellent service, spare change plus a buck for walk-up or carry-out.
However if the server is an ass or I have to constantly chase them I'll leave .50 cents as my message they suck. One girl actually came out of a restaurant to challenge me on this one time. I told her we waited 20 minutes for her to even acknowledge we were there, food was slow, she never stopped back after order to check on drinks or anything, but we could see she was really busy talking to her fellow waitress most of the time. She blew a fuse and checked the quarters at me, left in a huff. Fortunately I have only had to do this maybe tree times in my life.
People in restaurants hustle. It's a tough job, especially low end places like Denny's. Never forget that.▪█───────█▪
