So once upon a time a few years back I shattered my right ankle...ever since then I have lost a full range of movement in it. Its fine side to side but my ability to move my ankle forward and backward completely isn't there anymore. Example when I go to deadlift I grab the bar then when I try to lower my butt my right heel comes off the floor. Same problem with squats. At the bottom of the squat my right heel comes up. My left ankle does fine. So my question is, could this be causing my lower back to hurt(since its not allowing me to follow proper form)? And is there an alternative to deadlifting or a way to compensate for my ankle?

Deadlifts with a Trap bar would allow you to keep a more vertical shin. That could be the next step after trying a sumo stance.
