I've only heard about how Lyle McDonald seems to randomly pop up on forums and berate people. Today, I saw this thread on ******** (linked below) where Lyle came in and started talking **** about a supplement sold by some people mentioned in the OP. If all he did was talk about the supplement, I wouldn't care, but he was immediately hostile. Why? Is there some history that I'm missing?

I am not sure what was going on there, but if Lyle wasn't trolling, he may have had a history with those guys that we don't know about. I am not so sure what the big deal is, the dosing isn't pixidusting. Creatine was dosed at a solid 5 grams per serving, caffeine at 200mg, both of those are completely fine. Lyle's biggest issue is the BA dosed at 3.2. Big deal. Simple enough to add a second dose later on if you think that is underdosed for the day. Besides, dosing any higher would almost certainly result in paraesthesia (tingling)
As for his gripe with being able to buy the bulk ingredients much cheaper, well, no kidding, that is true for practically all supplements.

He doesn't even seem as angry as usual. He makes a strong argument especially when saying certain ingredients in a pre workout are only used as "hot button" to make it sell. Lettuce beef cereal, the novice user doesn't know any better and when they see creatine or beta on the label, they're much more likely to buy it than something with a bunch of ingredients they've never heard of.

I think his main issue is they added in creatine and BA because they are "hot supplements" right now and basically while they have benefits in general there is no need to have them in a preworkout as they do nothing for workout performance.
Like someone said above he could handle things without being a total dick but his point was still pretty solid overall IMOLog -> http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=153108621

Pretty much this + he has been in the business a long time...This has just worsened his anger towards all the marketing crap out there along with the sensationalist claims.
I am a huge fan of his books as they provide great indepth analysis based on actual evidence...I just sure as hell wouldn't want to talk to him about it"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." -William James

Yeah, I get that BA and creatine do not need to be timed as a pre-workout, as they are both about saturation and maintaining saturation, which can be achieved at any time of the day.
But it is not like some crappy supplements that either hide stuff in a prop blend, or pixi dust the amounts just so they can have it on the label, but it is such a small amount as to have no effect.
I actually don't know anything about that product or company (I just looked it up to see what was on the label) but IMO Lyle's anger would be better directed at many of the other pre-workout supps out there that have a bunch of weeds and grass clippings and roots as the main ingredients.
I suspect that this particular rant probably has something to do with some past history between these fellas.
