Only supplement DHEA if your levels are low. Get tested...period if you feel you need to take it. Any excess will convert to estrogen....not a benefit.

DHEA is a non regulated hormone. You should not take this just because you can purchase it in a store. Go get tested by a hormone doc, an endo. He will help you and advise if you need it. The hormonal system is not something to mess around with.

According to my endocrinoligist, DHEA should not be swallowed because the digestive tract can tear it down and the first pass through the liver makes it highly likely to be converted to estrogen straight away. The way to take DHEA is to cut the little pills in quarters and take them sub-lingually. They will absorb pretty well under the tongue. Some are specifically designed for that but those that are not are just tolerably bitter and leave a very fine grit that can be swalled harmlessly after you've given it ten to fifteen minutes for absorption. When training hard and waking up after a very good nights sleep when a cup of coffee doesn't perk me up, a 1/4 of a 50mg DHEA under the tongue, sometimes a second one, will get the metabolism kicking again. That makes the "day after" slow recovery aerobic tolerable and helps with the energy to complete a 45 min session of Yoga and various body weight exercises afterwards. DHEA level in the body should be noticeable when you get out of bed as a feeling that you got a good night's sleep and you're raring to go. But when you awake, have slept plenty of hours and you still feel like crap, its coffee first, then DHEA under the tongue. Some mornings, I can actually feel a sensation wave across my body as if homeostasis was resetting due to the DHEA under the tongue.
After very hard training, the adrenals can get pretty tired when we get older and not put out the DHEA for the morning rise from bed that they should. DHEA levels should peak by Noontime for most people's schedules. My DHEA was measured at 9am at only 216 out of a range of 16-1636 ng/dL after a very slow 7 mile jog. All other hormones were enviable considering my age. My main complaint was slow recovery taking several days from exercise and a feeling of residual fatigue after rising from a good night's sleep. I had been taking 50mg of DHEA daily for several months just to get the 216 reading. The endocrinologist concluded that I certainly wasn't taking too much and the results indicated I was low compared to robust results in free T and total T, LH, FSH. So he told me that I should continue to use the DHEA on an "as needed" basis which was a very conservative way to employ it without causing excess estrogen. He recommended the sub-lingual method for best results and I've found it noticeably effective where I could actually feel better energy when I would have been really fatigued without the supplement. Apparently the websites that extoll the virtues of DHEA have got a very good point for older people and particularly older athletes. Couldn't care less about it being "banned". May as well ban vitamin C too.Last edited by Poppypbr; 09-12-2013 at 09:11 AM.
