I never see anyone using them anymore in the gym..
I'm 51 and find my lower back little sore after shoulder day-doing shoulder presses.
Would a weight belt help this situation? I've been told I am using the correct form.

I use one on all my heavier lifts including squats, deads, snatches, and C&J's. It allows me to build more internal pressure which helps with stabilize better which allows me to lift more weight and lifting more weight is really the whole point. Generally I save it for max or near max loads.

Are you doing anything to strengthen your lower back? I used to get this issue with overhead press too. It (and my other lower back problems) went away after I started deadlifting. The pain was caused by a strength imbalance between my lower back and upper body.
I haven't worn a weight belt since high school. I try to avoid things like that unless I have a good reason for wearing them. The only thing I wear at the gym (other than clothes) are knee sleeves for leg day. I started wearing those after a knee injury a few years ago.

I just searched for articles and found this one:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson101.htm
The main thing I'd recommend is using a double overhand grip instead of an over / under grip like in the article. Form is very important with deadlifts, more than with most lifts. Just start extremely light before you start lifting real weight. Don't push yourself until you know you have the right form and the movement feels comfortable.

This is another good exercise to build core strength, and it's easier.

I did these for a few months before I felt comfortable enough to start deadlifting.

I just bought a weight belt ... in order to have something to hang weights off of when I do weighted dips and weighted pull ups. You're 51 and lifting, grats.

Yeah, real men don't use straps, wraps or belts and do deadlifts to cure AIDS and brain tumors.
We should have a sticky for bb.com cliches.
I use a belt for some lifts. May or may not be necessary but it does help me feel more stable. I did a quick experiment where I threw my belt over 405 and screamed at it and it couldn't make the weight move so I figured I was still doing most of the work.2 + 2 = 5 (for extremely large values of 2)

I have a Inzer Forever belt that I use once I go over 315 on squats and deadlifts.
In my gym there's only two other dudes who use belts. One's an olympic lifter and only has it on when he's doing O-lifts, the other only does bench and curl and never takes his belt off for any reason.Disclaimer: I am not an expert.

Joining the ranks of the fools I guess, now that i'm regularly Dl'ing over #400 it just seems like the thing to do. Ordered up this along with a box of chalk and supposed to be here in hopefully 5 days or so.
