To lose fat, eat less calories than you burn every day.

To gain muscle, eat more calories than you burn every day.

In both cases get plenty of protein and lift heavy.

Is this simple enough? Obviously, the sticky threads weren't simple enough.

^^ this, its that simple, read the stickies and eat at a defecit of 500 until you reach your goal, along the way hit your macros and lift heavy, when you are ready to gain, do exactly the same but eat 1000 extra calories then your cutting, simples

As you can see by the above comments that doing both at the same time is contradictory. Pick one or the other.

That's not 100% true. If OP is a beginner lifter, it's possible for him to build a bit of muscle while eating at a deficit. That will stall out though.

This. Pick one or the other. I've seen it far too many times here that people who try to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time just end up doing nothing.
"Everyone thinks they're on their way to single digit body fat as soon as they see a blurry four-pack in the right lighting.Your final body weight at 5-6% will be a lot less than what you think.Talk to me again when you get in contest shape." I'd be willing to say that 95% of people on this forum accomplish nothing in years, don't be one of those people. It's sad, they seem to have the knowledge many don't but can't utilize it.

People think that you can have a couple of low cal days to burn fat and then a couple of high cal days to build muscle. All this does is basically put you at maintenance. Your weekly cals determine what is going to happen. Generally a couple of months minimum to see any real benefit with either adding mass or leaning out before switchingback and forth

Wont be building much in terms of muscle, but can add size/strength when recovering from muscle atrophy. Strength most likely comes from CNS adaption while size comes from atrophy recovery.
