Yeah Yokohama and Kobe have big Chinatowns. This is because they were the port cities in Japan after the Shogunate went down and thus these cities opened Japan to the world, including China. Nagasaki I hear also has a big Chinatown though I have never been there.

So some more pics. While in Japan, went to the convenience store a lot (the local Family Mart) and found these foods. Didn't buy but found them curious.


Oreo Bar and GIANT Little KitKat (Only in Japan can you get a Giant Little thing).


Wasabeef flavored potato chip (what the heck is Wasabeef flavor? I know I know its wasabi beef but who puts Beef flavor on a potato chip?)

Ok so some pics from Yokohama Chinatown.


My great skill at taking pic. Tried to walk and take a pic at night using no flash (thus long exposure time)....blah.


Yokohama Chinatown has a TON of restaurants and a bunch of these food booths where you can buy food to go.

Went into one of the restaurants and ordered 4 fixed menu dinner (2 more expensive, and 2 less expensive). Both were really good. Some random pics.


Appetizer plate of Char Siu, marinated jellyfish, and braised chicken. The Char Siu was very good. My son loved the jellyfish. I thought the chicken was AMAZING.


Shark's fin soup. Was ok. We thought the egg and mushroom soup that came with the more expensive course was much better but forgot to take a pic.


Some wrapped fried shrimp thingy. This thing was really good.

Fried wonton and shrimp in red chili sauce (very popular in Japan). Wonton was ok. Shrimp was very good.


Braised Shark's Fin...this was AMAZING!

There was a number of other dishes that came out like a nice fried rice dish, an really good sweet and sour pork dish (which is interesting since I usually don't like sweet and sour pork) and a few other dishes. Ended the meal with a nice Almond Tofu dessert.

After dinner, we were walking around and I decided to buy some Jian dui. They were really nice, crispy on outside and soft on the inside with a lightly sweet red bean paste.




Also, these pan fried Xiaolongbao are all the rage now here. My son wanted to try them so we got some.


They were very very good but you have to be careful when you bite into them since you may get burnt with the hot soup that comes out. My son found out the hard way.

Anyway, thats part 1 of of the Chinatown tour. Will post the rest later.

Yeah portions in Japan are small (unless you go to one of those weird GONZO size restaurants where a dish costs $30 - $50). However the prices of food have come down a lot in Japan so things are not as expensive as it was in the 1980s.
