ohhh how i hope yall dont black ball me after this thread but i find myself thinking this a lot... How many of yall, that want to be dead honest, actually like the idea of having a BAD ASS gym more than you actually like working out in it?? There i said it... I mean to me the people that have the baddest home gyms should be the baddest dudes bc they have no excuses at all. I actually started mine bc i have two kids and my wife works
7PM-7AM and every other weekend so my only way of lifting is normally 4-5am or at night after the kids are down... SOOOOOO maybe its just me looking around this part of the forums and seeing guys so pumped about equipment(me included) that i dont see as much enthusiasm about actually lifting(sometimes me also) ANYWAY... So whose going to throw the first stone

I've wondered that myself. Keep in mind though, this forum is supposed to be more about the actual equipment. There are plenty of forums about actual working out. I think you'll find many of the posters on this forum post in those as well.

I don't hate working out but it is not "fun" for me. Working out and the lifestyle that goes with it is something that I feel that I must do for the rest of my life. To combat boredom in my gym, I try to get enough equipment for some variety. If I knew that I only had dumbbells and a power rack for workouts the rest of my life, I would just join a gym with tons of gear to hold my interest..........uggghhhh......then I would have to deal with other gym goers.

My home equipment consist of weider , cap, marcy and gold's gym plates lol. And I'm putting them to good use lol. The no excuse homemade equipment thread here is my favorite, but the picture thread is motivating me for when I get my own place I will build my own gym.

As thedickus said, this is the equipment forum, theres other sections on this site to discuss training and nutrition. I've always been lucky in that I love training, but the past 16months has been bad. Injuries pretty much called a halt on my training and killed a lot of my motivation. I'm on the mend now and at the end of this month I am thinking of starting a training log to help with my motivation and keep me on track so I don't rush things. My point is, that if I can't talk about my non existant training, then I will talk about my other passions instead. This forum has kept my head in the game, and for that I'm thankful.

Well .. this * is * Equipment forum !
I hear ya ...
There are other areas to check out lift routines, etc.
For some, the 'having' of the object is more important
For others, it's the using of the object to achieve a goal.
Does having better quality equip or more than the 'Rack, Bench, Oly Bar & 300 lbs of plates'
make a difference ?
It's often said that buying a guitar doesn't make you a guitar player ..
Some of the best musicians use some of the simplest / most straightforward equip ..
Me? I view the equip as a tool (along with diet, consistency of lifting, and personal motivation)
to achieve my personal goals.
I appreciate a lot of the high end gear pictured here, however I am far more limited by my own abilities at this time as opposed to the relatively basic equip I have.
That said, I have a combo of used Ivanko plates (I like the quality, wear & some rust ok with me), a basic rack, nice bars (2) & dumbells & benches from Craigslist.
Yes, I'm in the same boat (5:30 - 6:30 am workout, 'honey - don't clang the weights and keep the music down .. ") workout in the garage on horse stall mats.
I do have some great motivation pix in the garage ..
and decided that whilst work out gear is cool .. I'm not an equipment slut ..
Use what I got, push myself and feel great in *my workout area* .. and keep learning and getting info & tips from the high quality posters on the forum.
best,
not famous yetIron doesn't lift itself ..

Jtrain I have caught myself wondering the same thing. Although I do love working out, and have worked out long before I had a home gym. To me working out is my hobby, and all that goes along with it, nutrition, equipment, and the workouts. So for me, the equipment just makes working out that much more enjoyable.

people just like nice things and if it's related to a hobby or, better yet, a lifestyle, then i say buy nice, instead of twice. some of my friends are gear sluts for guitars and they'll never play on a stage. you invest in your passions, but hopefully, you're using what you've invested in. if you're asking whether people are just buying nice to buy nice, then i'd say that's a shame, but it's their money.
for some, flipping is fun and makes a little side cash with low risk.

I have a home gym that many say is pretty incredible. But I've really only been working out at LA Fitness for the past 6 months LOL.
I know exactly the reason why though... I am usually an after-work workout person meaning right after work at 6pm I head into my gym and bust ass until around 8pm when I'm ready to eat dinner. Done this for many years. Now that my wife and I live together our biggest alone time together is at dinner and she wont eat past 7pm and she's raging hungry when she gets home at 6pm... So dinner now is always at 6:30pm so that means no workout for me. My wife is an early morning person so we tried 6am workouts which we did for a while and my cardio workouts were great but I had nooooooooo strength in my lifting in the morning so it was sort of pointless to me.
So here I am now with my best solution, joined LA Fitness next to my work and I go during my lunch break Mon-Wed-Fri. Was doing 6am cardio and then strength at LA Fitness for a while but that got to be tiring as well so just LA Fitness now.
I still love having the gym though, just knowing its there is comforting and its my man cave. Some days when my wife is busy after work I will still go down there and catch up on all my recorded shows while working out. My workshop is next to my gym too so its a super manly place to get away.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #58 []---[]

Lifting is one of my favorite things to do and adding new equipment just adds to the versatility of the workouts,
so I see the purchases as an investment for myself. Bringing in new pieces that enhance the lifting experience makes it that much better.
What, you mean you couldn't lift that on your own? It only weighs two tons, which makes it only 2,000lbs for each hand.Last edited by TheDude8734; 04-05-2013 at 12:46 PM.

My man cave gym is the only one I can use with any type of consistency. I've been off and on even then, but I know I'd hate going to a gym, waiting for equipment, listening to beiber, etc. Now that I'm 30 and going to be married next Jan. I'm getting back into a routine I can hopefully keep up for life. I have done a bit of flipping and such which has paid for a portion of my current setup. I still browse for insane deals I can make a few bucks on the side as a hobby. I'll not be selling any of my current equipment and expect them to last a lifetime.

Not me, that's for sure. I'm not the strongest, beefiest, or most physically capable dude around but my interest in equipment is completely the result of my interest in improving myself.
Why go through the trouble and expense of getting something if you don't intend to use it?
Now, I understand that people do take pride in their "stuff", and it can appear obsessive.
Well, I'd rather hear about someone's success with scoring a cool <something> which is a helpful tool to their improvement, then hear them get all narcissistic talking about how wonderful the results of their training are.
It's personal preference. If you'd prefer to hear a bunch of bros go on about how awesome their biceps are, there are plenty of other forums for you to read.()---() York Barbell Club #5 ()---()

Like others have said, this part of the forum is for workout equipment, so that's what people discuss.
Many people here have home gyms by choice or by necessity and having a home gym yields unique challenges. Price and space are issues for a lot of people and this is a great place to come to see how others have addressed those challenges. We see people who have created really innovative DIY solutions, who have found good deals online or are willing to share their knowledge of a company's equipment and customer service.
I have a number of friends who work out and I can go almost anywhere on the internet for bro science and pictures of people flexing or the new spinach-water-oatmeal-egg white super macro protein shake, but this equipment forum is pretty unique and an awesome place to look for ideas that I can implement in my own gym or just for some good old metal pron.

I live for training.
All of the things that go along with "the lifestyle" (such as diet) are a result of always seeking to improve that^.
Equipment is one of the more enjoyable hobby aspects of the lifestyle which also happens to have a big impact on improving that^^.
Equipment interest is also somethin to keep me from burning out on "the lifestyle". I get to rotate how much effot I put into each sub-hobby of the lifestyle..
but I always catch myself looking to buy things when I'm bored during my deload week.[̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°̲̅)̲̅$̲̅] Equipment Crew #57 [̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°̲̅)̲̅$̲̅]

I got a lot of great help from the guys in here when I was looking to put together my home gym. I post here to pass that on and hang out because this is were the best guys on this site hang out.
My gym isn't all top of the line but it is more than I will ever need and it fits in the space I have and looks good there. It gets used way more than the crappy stuff I had before did too. Honestly in the last two years all I have bought is a two bars, one an upgrade the other a specialty bar.[]---[] Equipment Crew Member No. 11

Sooooooooo true.
The workout equipment community is cooler than any other that I've ever been a part of. I've yet to see any car club, golf companion, drinking buddy, so on and so forth has been as willing to help each other out in such selfless ways. I will admit that I am much more interested in the equipment than the lifting. While I am just getting back into lifting and have been doing it 3 or 4 times a week for the last 8 month to stay in shape, I have always been into the mechanics and equipment of any thing I take am interest in, so I naturally gravitate to this forum. I read the over 35 forum and make a few comments, but don't really know enough to contribute knowledgeably (doesn't seem to stop some). I feel more a home in this section.
