If you could live anywhere in the U.S.........

.....where would it be?

I telecommute for work and can literally live anywhere in the U.S. and am looking for some recommendations from "locals" to their areas. We decided to live in the mountains in Colorado for some years and I've grown tired of the oppressive winters here (summers are great). Cost of living out here is high and hard to find good neighbors with kids for our son to play with.

Would LOVE to live in a warmer climate, a beach community would be great (Hilton Head Island, SC was a suggestion from a friend), low to moderate cost of living, not remote (plenty of entertainment, recreation, etc.). I realize I'm painting broad strokes but would love to hear from locals to their parts of the world and why they chose to live there and enjoy it.

Somewhere in New England would be lovely! Small, historic town...beautiful foliage in the Autumn, a 'little bit' of snow in the Winter. LOL Well, depending on the year. I'd keep an eye out for things like state income tax though.

Right where I live now, Nashville, TN. It's very affordable, tons of things to do, clean, centrally located, good schools, and no income tax in TN. I have a brother who telecommutes (self employed) and lives in Charleston. He loves it. I think it's a little more expensive.

I agree with you. I have traveled all over this great State. West Texas is where you will find the most friendliest people in the world. The hill country is not far behind though.

The Big Island and San Diego are both on our radar, we need to explore both areas (remote research and in-person) to find out more.

I have also heard folks recommend the OR coast due to the much lower cost of living.

I would probably pick San Diego based on the climate though my travels to the States are mostly the Northern places plus Florida and Texas. Could easily live there as well.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of work do you do that lets you telecommute?

Right where I live now, Southwest Michigan. We are 5 minutes from Lake Michigan and various state forests, 15 minutes from the St Joe river, 15 minutes from some great wineries and breweries, 90 minutes from skiing, and this is great place to raise kids.

Really nice area as well, definitely doesn't have the harsh brutal winters we get in Wisconsin.
