"climbed into a neighbor’s home through a back window"
Doesn't matter if he was drunk, he still was in the wrong.
Whenever someone hits someone and kills them while under the influence, "oh he was drunk" is not valid defense for manslaughter...*Misc Firearms Crew Illuminati*

Sad part is the homeowner will probably go to prison. I dont care what the circumstance if someone breaks into my home in the middle of the night (especially while I have a family) I am within my rights to do whatever I deem appropriate.

How can some of you take the position that his alleged intoxication offers him a pass in this situation? If the same idiotic 16 year old got behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated and killed himself, you'd be the first to say the outcome was justified... and all of this nonsense about identifying your target, etc. is moronic at best.
BRB, holding homeowner protecting his family responsible for target identification but not intoxicated teenager for residence identification...is this real life?
Asserting that said homeowner should have interrogated the intruder before protecting himself and his family, as if he should have assumed the person breaking in to his home in the middle of the night was just an unarmed teenager... and what if it wasn't?
What if it was an armed attacker, or attackers who had no qualms responding to his questions with gunfire, or violence? He had a responsibility to protect his family by any means necessary. He did just that.

He most likely will not een go to court for this. In VA he will not be charged for any crime unless the authorities believe it was unjustified, which it clearly was not. The only thing that could happen would be for the kids parents to sue the homeowner, which would go no where.

the responses in this thread remind me of when people ask why cops don't try and shoot armed criminals in the legs to avoid having to kill them
these things happen so fast people don't have time to think about all the possible scenarios. this guy was sleeping in the middle of the night and is woken up to his house alarm going off, he went and got his gun and was trying to protect himself.
brb announcing im armed to the intruder so he knows where i am and that i have a weapon so he can kill me easier? Nah im going navy seal silent style and capping the first thing that moves

Obviously the home owner was in his right to do so, but in my opinion, he made an absolutely retarded decision and to be honest I could never see this happening in my country (no hate on USA, would love to live there, srs.)
But to be fair, I don't really see how you can blame anyone for this. It just happened, and it's very sad.
