You can live in the outerboroughs for 1/2 the price and 200% more room and enjoy all the ammenities since there are subways everywhere.

You are so jelly of my 1st floor apt. with a private fenced in backyard with space for a decent veggie garden, my own private parking spot, my access to the world's fair, Citifield, Tennis centers, etc.... and only 20 minutes to Midtown for only $100 more than you pay.
Also Forest Hills comes in at the top 10 safest areas in NYC every year.*Stopped smoking crew* 2 years and 5 month bishes, and counting.*

I couldn't imagine living in Mahatten. I couldn't justify it since I could live in any other borough for half the price, and easily take a 15 minute subway ride to manhatten. I live in uptown Brooklyn, literally two subway stops from manhatten, and its cheaper. But then again, I only go to school here, and even then it's expensive for living.

I lived there for years in two studio apartments. The first was a on the West 80's just off of Central Park West for $1,300/month (rent stabilized, I got lucky)... it was small but it had private outdoor space which was amazing in the summer... and the second was in the East 60's off of First Ave. for $1,600 (reduced from $1,950 the previous tenants were paying)... it was huge for a studio, but I'm not a fan of the UES. If you look hard enough and have patience, you can find affordable studios, but it's not easy.

Strong this.
Got friends who live in the city, apts ranging sh*tty studios to 3 bedrooms on the upper west side...wayy to expensive. Obviously if your in the UWS and UES you can easily afford it.
Still, lived in Forest Hills, best area in Queens and legit one of the best in NYC. (pretty sure Stab lives there too). brb 30 mins away from midtown, 30-40% less rent, more space, mad chill areas and actual trees.Oakland Raiders! Just Win Baby!!

What's your definition of "comfort"? I lived by myself in a studio, went out one or two nights a week to local bars, cooked my own food, rode the subway, had a gym membership, and otherwise lived like I currently live in the suburbs making much more money... I was perfectly comfortable. There wasn't a single aspect of my life that suffered because of my income. If your definition of comfort is paying $30 covers and $15 for a beer at clubs, taking cabs everywhere, joining $200/month gyms, and eating out seven days a week, than yes, $100,000 is probably necessary, but that's the fault of your lifestyle, not NYC's cost of living.

I subleased a place when I was 19 in the W. Village, it was the size of a closet but many good times were had. For single peeps that can deal with living in very small spaces and only need a place to sleep it's not a bad deal.
Many transplants need to know though that the closet sized apartment for $2K a month is avg for Manhattan and the realtor is not trying to rip them off. The midwest transplants crack me up the most because the first words out of their mouths are, "OMG this is it? My bedroom back home is bigger than this!" They get so mad.*Stopped smoking crew* 2 years and 5 month bishes, and counting.*
