The different segments of your pec produce varying amounts of torque based on the angle of the force you're exerting. If the upper 3rd of the muscle is working harder than the lower 2/3, then those fibers will be stimulated more.
Even though muscles are one "muscle" they are actually a collection of individual fibers who work in concert via inserts and origins, but ARE ultimately independent units.
