I'm starting to train for my first powerlifting meet. I'm doing just the raw deadlift. I trained with straps and Versa Gripps for a long, long time. I've recently started training without them, and started using chalk. However, I've run into an issue. I can't stand the feel of chalk on my hands. It's some kind of weird sensory BS, that makes me shiver, like nails on a chalk board. I've tried to get over it, but it's really damn distracting while I'm trying to lift. Are there any SPF competition legal alternatives to chalk out there? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Ugh. Really? Thanks for the helpful reply. So, indirectly you are saying is if a lifter wants or needs chalk, they should bother competing? That's a sad elitist premise, but whatever...
LOL. It's hard to explain. It's probably comparable to when a dentist scrapes a tooth that has a metal filling for some people. It's a physiological response.
Thing is, once I start pulling over 400, I start feeling the need for something to help me with grip, since my hands get so damn sweaty.Last edited by Paulie_G; 03-14-2013 at 10:23 AM.

I work through all kinds of pain and discomfort, and for the most part welcome it. This is different. It's almost an uncontrollable physiological response that is too bizarre to figure out how to handle...
I was thinking that it isn't legal in SPF comps, since they say "spray adhesives" are not legal. Liquid Grip was my first thought too, until I saw that. Maybe they don't consider that as such?Last edited by Paulie_G; 03-14-2013 at 10:56 AM.

Sandpaper your hands nightly , your hands will be rough and profit.
But seriously, there isnt guna be any other solution other than to force yourself to use chalk with light reps for 100's of reps to desensitize yourself. I used to get urg when people used the word pallet ( for taste ) then i started work distribution and everything is based on pallets, 1 month later i no longer hate the word.Athletics > Aesthetics
I guess its time to start training again.

This. I prefer hook grip over mixed grip. Even without chalk, I can pull 400+ without issue. We'll see what happens as I go higher, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
There are ways to make it less painful though. Two strips of medical/sports tape on each thumb long enough to wrap around twice. One around the nail, the other between the knuckles. I found that cutting my thumbnails as far back as I can helps a lot too.Last Meet:

I hate to burst your bubble, but the bar will be covered in chalk at the meet since everyone else is using chalk. Also, in training you can just put chalk on the bar instead of on your hands. I doubt it would be so bothersome.
You probably just want to desensitize yourself to it though. It'll build character.637/390tng/615 - belt/wraps, best gym lifts.

Put 5-10 chalks in a wire cage. Leave them there for a day or two so they are ravenously hungry. Then open the door of the cage and put your face in. Let the chalks go wild on your face; they will probably bite it and eat away a significant amount of flesh given how hungry they are. After this, you will no longer fear chalks.

I know exactly what you're talking about. We have a set of knives and the handles are like brushed aluminum or something similar. I literally can't hold them in my hand. It's something between a cold shiver and an actual shock. I've never had that problem with chalk though. Can't be of any help because I've yet to be able to fix it, and I don't know of any pl bar that's not going to be covered in chalk.
