98% chance of rain, 46* F is the forecast.

    Pros:
    Fewer other people there
Easier to call cold and go downrange to check, mark, and post targets
Easier to do draw from the holster for time using my shot timer
In the real world it rains, to even pretend to call what you do legitimate training or practice you can't hide from the weather

    Cons:
Drive an hour fifteen or more each way in the rain
Range is GA red clay without a lot of grass and probably gets really messy in the rain
Target holders use cardboard and only paper targets so they can get very hard to use when all wet
While any go-to gear ought to be able to get rained on, I bring stuff I don't want to get wet, like the shot timer, tools, etc. But the line IS covered, so should really be okay I think
Sounds like fun to me, I'd do it

now here on the other hand.. 65mph winds, no thanks jeff

    Yes.

I'm planning on going tomorrow afternoon. Supposed to be about 38 and partly cloudy here.

Should I also do the same with a pistol, i.e. get a .22 at first? I've had practice with .22 pistols probably more than a rifle.

Thanks for all the help guys

It's not a bad idea. There are also .22lr conversion kits for some pistols

I store them where I think they will be the most useful/available. In the car, in a backpack or bag, in a drawer, in a nightstand, on a desktop, wherever. Magazines and ammunition are both quite hardy and do not have any kind of special storage requirements. Loaded magazines are no different.

If you are keeping an eye out you can find ammo at normalish prices. You also don't need to go through a few hundred rounds for it to be an effective training outing.

I wish I could say I had something particularly scientific, but it's pretty ad hoc. Most of the 5.56 magazines are stuffed into range/rifle bags or carry pouches of various sorts, with the remainder in a box in the closet:

The AK mags are the same but stacked a bit more carelessly:

I have a bunch of grab-mags on top of my safes:

And then of course, being an Ivy League intellectual type, I believe that everything has to be taken in context.

Planning on more practice with the AK, about 100 rounds or so. I also want to get some work with my 9mm, it's been a while, probably go through a box and a half (have a half box left from last outing) and I need to shoot the 30-06 I got from my dad. I'll probably only use the open box I got from him.

A first firearm that is best for learning, in .22lr, doesn't do self defense well.

    glock 17 gen 3
    night sights

    done

i also like the glock oem 3.5# connector and then from there the trigger is pretty good imo, but this is up to you. some people say it may cause reliability problems but i haven't noticed any
fyi if you live in some state with 10 rd mag limits, maybe don't get the glock. glock 10 round mags are not that great.
