Melatonin helps some, but 3 mg leaves me sleepy the next morning. 1 to 1.5 mg is a better dose for me. Magnesium at bedtime can be relaxing, but 113 mg is too small of a dose for me. I generally take 400 mg at night.
That's the main problem I have with supps like this. They throw a bunch of ingredients together without taking into consideration individual tolerance levels. I'd rather buy melatonin and magnesium separately and take the right amount for me.
Taurine is another OTC sleep aid that helps. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) helps too, but that quits working soon if you take it every night. Theanine can be good, but that's another one where you build a tolerance quickly. I've tried virtually every OTC and prescription sleep aid out there. The only one that ultimately works for me is something we're not allowed to discuss here.

Sedating antidepressants should really be a last resort (or almost a last resort) when it comes to insomnia. Drugs like Remeron and Trazodone can work, but they do a lot more than just help you sleep. They are powerful drugs with major side effects. I've tried both in desperate times. I wouldn't want to take them for the long term unless they were really the only way I could get some sleep.

That one's better for me since I could take a smaller dose. I get enough zinc and B6 through my diet and multivitamin, so I don't really need those. I don't believe zinc increases testosterone levels unless you have a zinc deficiency.
This is what I actually take every night:

It's easier to get the right dose with liquid melatonin.

Totally disagree. They are harmless for most people in low doses and they are a much better alternative to habit causing and brain chemistry changing hypnotics like ****** and benzos. If your sleep is ****ed enough that it's affecting your life you do what you can. Melatonin is a joke placebo doctors suggest to people to get them out of their office.

I have trazadone and it works, perhaps a little too well. If I take a full one my next day is a wasted morning because i'm so groggy and have zero energy. 1/2 a tablet is all I take now and even that is only maybe once every 2-3 months.
Have tried melatonin and it didn't do a damn thing. ZMA gives me real fukked up dreams so i won't take that anymore."You know that little thing in your head that keeps you from saying things you shouldn't? Yeah, well, I don't have one of those."

Cheap and Effective
I use an allergy medicine from Costco. It's like $4.00 for 400 pills...... Kirkland Signature Allergy Medicine Diphenhydramine HCI 25 MG, 400 Minitabs. Seems more expensive on Amazon, but they also have it.
I bought it for allergies, but found I couldn't stay awake while on it. I started taking it as a sleep aid and have used it for several years. I take one pill 2 hours before bed and one pill when I go to bed.

400mg of magnesium before bed here.
Precautions:
Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, dietary supplements should be taken only under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care provider.
Since magnesium is excreted by the kidneys, people with heart or kidney disease should not take magnesium supplements except under their doctor's supervision.
It is very rare to overdose on magnesium from food. However, people who ingest large amounts of milk of magnesia (as a laxative or antacid), epsom salts (as a laxative or tonic), or magnesium supplements may overdose, especially if they have kidney problems. Too much magnesium can cause serious health problems, including nausea, vomiting, severely lowered blood pressure, confusion, slowed heart rate, respiratory paralysis, deficiencies of other minerals, coma, cardiac arrhythmias, cariac arrest, and death.
More common side effects from magnesium include upset stomach and diarrhea.
Magnesium competes with calcium for absorption and can cause a calcium deficiency if calcium levels are already low. Some medications may lower magnesium levels in the body. These include chemotherapy drugs, diuretics, digoxin (Lanoxin), steroids, and certain antibiotics."I'm not a Ninja, but I played one on TV." -cmoore, American Ninja Warrior (ANW 7,8)

I have a weird reaction if I take either melatonin or GABA. I can't sleep for a couple of nights. Yes, not hours but nights. I'll never touch melatonin or GABA pills again. I just make sure to use dimmers and keep away from bright light sources before bed.
I discovered by accident that l-Arginine supplementation helps me get into a deep sleep.

That's funny. Many have repeated that l-arginine keeps them up. Interesting. True though with GABA, it can temporarily mess you up if you're not careful.
Now to the question.... some GABA (500mg - 1000mg) and l-theanine works wonders. Melatonin is over-rated and over-used.Chris Belanger | Vice President, Sales

Melatonin and valerian root work great for me. Dreams always include vivid sex and ants. Last night dreamed I was licking a girls azzhoe and ants crawled out of it and all over her body so I turned her around and ****ed her and her face literally fell off. Good times.

Melatonin is prescription only in the UK. I did buy some in the US and I found it made me feel groggy without actually sending me to sleep, so that was a fail.
I always find ZMA helps me get a good quality sleep. You can also look into 5-HTP.Current log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=149169243
