Whats the going rate on plates?

How much are you guy paying for a set of (like new) set of Olympic plates (2) 45, (2) 35, (2) 25, (2) 10, (2) 5, (2) 2.5 plates? I already have two sets with two bars but a guy at work wants to sell me his set of plates (without the bar) for $100. Ill have over 700 pounds of plates then and I think that’s probably enough. ;-)

It sounds like a fair price. I do not know the brand but the two sets I already have are both different and are the brands you get from sports authority. I have not lifted long enough to develope a brand crush yet.

Average cost is 50 cents per pound of used plates. Anything cheaper than that is below average.

If you feel like you need the extra weight or will soon need the extra weight I say go for it. If your only motivation for buying it would be the "amazing savings" I wouldn't waste the money. It's a decent deal but not something you could easily flip for any sort of big profit.

Its for home use. I keep building and adding more stuff to my home gym and would like plates at each location (some of the stuff is in different rooms on different floors.)

I'd grab it for $100. I have a little over 1200lbs of plates spread out over four plate trees because I hate carrying plates all over the place. One tree on each side of the rack, one in the deadlift area, and another over by my preacher curl bench.

Thats what I was thinking and the price seems right. Craigs lists has some crazy folks selling used plates for far too much.

I would just be weary of the plate brands and their actual weight.

Like I've seen a 300lb(260 plates) set from dicks as low as $180. I mean weight is weight but plates with large deviation on heaver lifts you could end up 10-20 pounds weight difference side to side.

50 cents used in my CL market.

255lbs + olympic barbell (45lbs) go for $180-$200 new at my local sporting good store (academy, sports authority, dicks)

4x a year academy will have 255lbs+ bar for $150.
It surprises me how many people refuse to buy equipment from Elitefts because its too expensive but they will buy equipment from their competitors, then continue to go on EFS website to educate themselves for FREE

Haha I consider carrying my 45's around and loading the bar GPP. Loading the bar sometimes is more difficult than the actual lift sometimes, especially once you start talking about about loading a lot of weight.

What is a good brand for the plates to watch for on Craigslist? Was going to buy a set, but now wondering about the brand and the deviations of weight mentioned.

Ivanko, Troy, Troy VTX, GPI, Cemco...there's a bunch of them out there. IMO you are best off just getting what you absolutely need to start with, and then scouring craigslist daily until the one day comes and you see a gym is upgrading their plates and you will clean house for cheap and score some really nice plates.

Then you either sell off your original plates to help fund the new ones or else keep them around for whatever purpose you have in mind.

To be honest, the weight deviation from one plate to another isn't that big a deal as long as you're aware of it and can make adjustments. If you're that worried about it, weigh your plates, pair them up by weight, and mark them so you know which ones go together.

Plates are 50¢ per pound, bars are $25, benches are $40, power racks are $200, cars are $5000, houses are $100,000, and clothes are 50¢.

    "How much are you guy paying for a set of (like new) set of Olympic plates (2) 45, (2) 35, (2) 25, (2) 10, (2) 5, (2) 2.5 plates?"

That's basically the plates from a 300 lb set minus the second pair of 5s and the bar. $100 is reasonable but nothing particularly exciting. "Plates" (meaning Cap or Troy USA or Sporting Goods Store Brand) are extremely common on CL. Like hex dumbbells. You can often find brand new 300 lb sets for $160 to $180 (including the bar) at the store. I probably wouldn't spend more than the $100 on 245 lbs of "plates". They would need to be in good condition also. And nearby. If they're rusty or the sale requires driving, I'd pass and just buy new ones when they're on sale. I'd only be willing to pay a little more for 45s without the other weights. I'd be willing to pay a lot more for commercial equipment.

I would snap them up for $100. Here in my part of Canada you can ask and get .75/lb for Olympic weights and sell them no problem in a day. I have sold 3 sets since December.

BTW shouldn't a complete set have four 5lb plates?
