In! With some tech news to share.

Aptina Enters into Patent License Agreement with Sony

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Aptina today announced that it has signed a patent cross-license agreement with Sony, which provides each company with access to the other's patent portfolio.

Aptina and Sony have built industry leading patent portfolios that include seminal image sensor patents covering image capture and processing methods. These technologies are fundamental to the world's growing image sensor industry, with sales of over two billion units annually, and found in almost every consumer electronics device including smart phones, automobiles, tablets, televisions, gaming platforms, medical equipment and digital cameras.

This cross-license agreement enables these two innovation leaders to operate freely and use each other's patented inventions to advance the pace of development for cameras and other imaging applications. The cooperation fostered by the cross-license reinforces the ability of both companies to provide compelling imaging solutions to their customers.

"Patents and innovation are a critical component of Aptina's strategy, and Aptina's patent portfolio is the largest and strongest in the image sensor industry," said Bob Gove, President and CTO of Aptina. "We believe that this powerful blend will advance technology to realize our goal of enabling consumers to capture beautiful images and visual information."

Aptina, the foundational CMOS imaging company, began within Micron Technology in 2001 with acquisitions of early CMOS imaging companies Photobit and then Avago Technologies' image sensor business. Aptina became an independent company in 2009. Aptina delivers advanced CMOS imaging solutions to all major imaging markets and is the leading supplier in many markets including the rapidly growing automotive market.

It will do the job, most definitely. Older cameras will always have less noise performance than more modern models, but you can alleviate that partly by using a wide aperture standard/prime lens which lets you use lower ISO speeds. Other than that, you'll be avoiding darker environments - I did the same with my Sony A100.

I actually just ordered a Nikon D200, it's much older, but I like the large, solid build and it was bought more to replace my aging A100. Excited to see it come in. In the cost range of a used d3000 I would also recommend looking too at the D80 and the D200 as well. Invest in a prime lens. The 50mm 1.8D will save you some money if the camera you choose to get has a built-in focus motor. If not, it will be a manual focus lens (The D models) the AF-S xmm 1.x G lenses have a motor in them for use on cameras that don't have the motor inside, but cost double a D counterpart.

    Hey guys, stupid question incoming....

I took a few pictures in JPG and the image size was 4608 X 3072, so when I open it up in GIMP, it is that size. But, then in the camera, I changed the image quality from JPG to RAW. When I took pictures (NEF) in RAW, they were all 160 X 120 in GIMP and when I try to resize them, the quality becomes terrible. Also, when I selected RAW, the option to change the image size in the camera was disabled.

Would the image size issue be fixed if I shot in RAW+JPG? I'm just confused lol.

The reason you're getting low res thumbnails is Gimp isn't converting the Nikon RAW file, it's simply grabbing a small embedded JPEG inside the RAW file.

You need software that can open and convert .NEF files.

Download View NX2 for free from Nikon's site, convert your files to TIFF with it and then edit them in Gimp.

re: processing, I think it's best to spend some time developing an understanding of the fundamentals first (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field, composition, etc.) before playing around with Photoshop which can easily become a crutch otherwise. When you're happy with images straight out of the camera, you know they're going to be even better with processing. It's better to approach it that way rather than 'I'll just fix it in Photoshop.'

Thanks for the advice - I'll definitely do that. I am only taking pictures in manual mode to try and understand the fundamentals. I watched a bunch of videos to help too, but that was before I bought my camera. I realized that even if I somewhat understood the concepts, that it is all about practice with the actual camera. For instance, ISO was something that I wasn't really grasping, but then when I took pictures without flash, I played with the ISO and now I have a better idea of how it works. I was getting a bunch of underexposed pictures and then kept gradually bumping up the ISO until it looked better. Thanks for posting the links too!

Yes! These are 5 exposure HDR's @ 1 stop intervals. Put together in Photomatix and then polished in PS 6. I don't do much HDR. I'm trying to get better @ landscape photography in general. There's some ghosting in these shots b/c it was a windy day Didn't notice 'til after I left. Stay tuned for more!
