I think this problem illustrates an intelligence or maturity gap between one state of social expectation (gender separation anxiety) to another more logical one (gender mixing and tolerance).
We are at a point in human societal development where we are beginning to realize how ridiculous some of our social constructs are, and these realizations lead some people to do some really wacky sheet like whip out their pee pee in a girls restroom to prove "acceptance". I don't think we're ready for that yet as a culture.
Other people on the other hand, like myself, are okay with our societal expectations, aren't going to be the asshats walking around naked or using the other gender's bathroom to make a point. But we believe that embarrassment about gender or anything else for that matter should disappear is a logical conclusion to development of consciousness as a species.
When you think about it, it is kind of ridiculous that we need to wear clothes for reasons other than protection or that we can't use the same bathroom because we're afraid of what might come from the mixing of sexes. So we're limited by the lowest common denominator for now. The question is, in the future, will this erode - or will we stay primal and tied down by it?

Is the future gender reassignment surgery a social construct too?

I think that we are living in a time where people are reacting to the logical loss of insecurity about gender and sexual embarrassment with illogical or responses retaliations, ranging from insecurity about it, all the way to a "too much" compensation response, like gender reassignment.
Its a tricky subject because its hard to evaluate on a small scale. I'm not aware or smart enough to be able to explain it on anything other than large scale societal progress/movement that influence the small scale individuals.

I don't think it is. There have been cultures in the past where it simply wasn't a big deal. There were effeminate men for example, and that was simply accepted. The concept of "transgender" and "gay" didn't exist. Example - the Greeks.
Now, of course, there were other societies where anyone would be shunned or even beaten/killed for being different. I'm just saying, that it's simply not true that this is happening "all of a sudden"

Yes, you *should* have the right to wear spandex and a cape - but not because you think you're a superhero. You should have that right because we supposedly have a right to our liberty. Public schools tramples all over students' basic rights, and forcing kids to attend by law is a violation of our rights as well. Aside from that, public education sucks and everyone knows it does. I highly recommend looking up youtube vids on Sudbury Valley schools, Freeschooling, and Salman Khan's Ted Talk for further info.
"...that's the great virtue of the free market, of the private market. It enables people...who hate one another...who don't speak the same language...who would fight one another if they had the chance, to cooperate economically. We were able to deal with China when China was a communist state. Even though we thought that that was a terrible arrangement, we could still cooperate. And that's what markets enable people to do. They bring freedom with them."
