I know its not for us to judge how much force is needed in these situations but unless his wife pulled a weapon on the officers then I see really no need to tackle a 100 pound woman.

Whatever it was, it was enough to cause a second Officer to come running upon seeing it.

The police were way too heavy handed here, bad policing should not be tolerated and I hope they can get a good compo payout.
Recently an amercian policeman Christopher Dorner was in the media, he was against corrupt policing and racism. In many ways he was right but he went a little over the top in trying to enforce good policing.
The officers who arrested Melvin and his wife are lucky Christopher Dorner did not work in their department.

Seems waaaay too heavy handed, especially if it's true that all they were pulled over for was an expired license plate...

if anything you should say: 'whether or not the force was justified depends on the threat she posed. unless we can determine that, we can't judge it. '
words do not justify the application of force, even law enFORCEments have other means at their disposal and don't have to live up to the literal meaning of their profession lol

Why should it matter what was said? Last time I checked we have this thing called freedom of speech. If words bothers a cop that much, that it causes him or her from losing their cool, then maybe the job is not for them. It seems like more of a power trip than anything.

Brah all I can say is why did nt the UK police use these tactics in the London riots? Seemes there was more force used in the arrest of melvin + wife.

Exactly...they often get confused on what/how their job is, I think they should conduct themselves in a more professional matter. Maybe it should be mandatory to do 2+ years in the service, and learn self control...obedience training?

Situation NEVER ends well when you slap/push a cop away. Do as your told and the situation goes smoothly.
I've seen WAY worse than that. Situations where yeah, the cops really were in the wrong. That was not one of them.
People may or may not agree with the statement "Cops think they're god." Regardless of that thought, at the end of the day they have something called "authority". Whether or not you like or dislike them, you should probably listen when they tell you something.

My speculation is that he was being dropped off at the airport by his wife. Cops probably came up and said "Hey buddy, gotta move". He probably said "One more minute." Cops: "No...now". At which point he probably starts to back-talk and get tough. Cop goes to push him away from the car (probably to make him go into the airport and leave). He then pushes the cop (mistake 1). Then the cops force him to comply and he resists (mistake 2). Downhill from there. Wife was told to get out of the car, fumbles around in purse, cop pulls her out to the ground.
Simple as that.
He could have stood there and said whatever to the cops. Degrade them, call them fat, whatever. Most they would have done would be issued him a ticket. The second you puts your hands on a cop...its game over.
There's simple rules in life you follow:
- Don't put your hands on cops
- Do as your told
- Don't resist arrest
- Don't fumble around in your purse, pockets, car, etc when a cop is asking you to comply in a volatile situation.

Goes beyond that too. A lot of younger people seem to have the idea of "**** authority" when it comes to police. But then the reprecussions of trying to be an adolescent baddass happen to be getting your ass handed to you by a couple police, there seems to be a lot of people crying out about human rights or some **** like that. Even Canada I see a lot of people, even people older than myself that think they can push against authority and be the victim. Too much entitlement these days.

This. Also if you watch the video closely it appears that the wife is resisting when they first try to get her out of the car. That's all it really takes to get taken to the ground.

Why is it allowed to have cops in bad physical condition? There should be a law and a regular check up done on them.
Don't you have to first pass physical tests before you enter the police?

The Melvin and Annie Anthony Case
The media isn't covering it yet, but they will. The age of the victimless crime is near its end.
Melvin and Annie were stopped for an expired license plate. They had just come from updating their plate but had not yet installed it.
Melvin told Annie she didn't have to tell the cop anything. He was right. Few know it today, but the truth and the Law is that unless you are suspected of a FELONY the police cannot ask you for I.D.
We have been taught that the police can ask for I.D. or stop us for almost any reason, but that is false. It is a crime for the police to ask us for I.D. unless they suspect that someone has been or will be injured. They are peace officers, charged with keeping peace, not raising revenue for the criminals who run the courts.
If they stop you for a busted tail light, that is an arrest as defined by the Supreme Court and totally unlawful. They then become the felon. It is a FELONY for the police to stop you unlawfully.
Read Brown v. Texas.
Melvin and Annie know the law. When Melvin told Annie she didn't have to give any information, the cop called in backup, and the couple were violently cuffed and hauled away.
When they got to court, Melvin and Annie refused to enter a plea. They were able to refuse because the jurisdiction was Administrative, not Criminal. They knew it was Administrative jurisdiction because there was no affidavit from an injured party.
What more people are realizing is that in Administrative jurisdiction you need not enter a plea. You can actually and literally refuse to consent to the proceeding. That is just what the couple did.
But what if the judge enters a plea on your behalf? That is what judges almost always do. They simply enter onto the court record that you entered a plea, even if you did not. They do this because victimless "crimes" are a multibillion dollar industry.
If a judge follows the law by dismissing Administrative cases where the defendant refuses to enter plea, he will no longer be welcomed by his buddies at the country club. He might actually be assassinated. Judges who rule in favor of the Law and the People sometimes get killed by bankers and other lawyers.
So the judge in Melvin and Annie's case entered a plea for them unlawfully. Fortunately the couple knew what to do. They immediately sued the judge in federal court under Title 42, section 1983 of the United States Code.
When next they went to court, the Anthonys had a new judge because the first had to recuse himself as he could not oversee a case in which the defendants were suing him. This new judge also broke the Law by continuing to railroad Melvin and Annie. Melvin and Annie sued him too, so that judge had also to recuse himself.
Then they had to sue the third judge for the same crime, and this judge refused to recuse himself!
However Melvin and Annie were right. It was the judges, prosecutor, and cops who were breaking the Law, not the heroic couple.
Those three judges, the prosecutor, and the gaggle of cops are right now (1-12-2013) in the summary judgment phase of the federal civil suit. That means they have already lost, without ever going to trial. They could offer no defense because their crimes were documented by the court record. There were no material facts in dispute; they are just plain indisputably guilty.
The amount of the damages is $5,650,000.00.
Hooray!
And that's only the civil side. Next comes the Title 18 criminal charge. Three judges, the prosecutor, and the cops are going to federal prison. There is no escape for them.
The charge against Melvin and Annie was dismissed with prejudice. The last page of the minutes of their case--which shows that the case was dismissed because the court's time ran out and the couple had never entered a plea--is the background of my main channel page. So you can go there to read it for yourself.
