That great thing about kids is that they ask questions and are blunt (well, it has a positive and negative side), but also accept fairly simple answers. I'm sure a 6 year old girl might ask, "Why is so-and-so in the girls bathroom? I thought he was a boy?" "Why does so-and-so wear dresses? He's a boy." How hard is it to say, "Well, so-and-so realized that she feels more comfortable as a girl and we're going to respect her choice. You don't have to treat her any differently, just treat so-and-so how you would like to be treated." Bam.

Honestly, these things are 10x easier to explain to children than to adults.

Then the other boys would want to use the rest room simply because they aren't allowed to and it seems unfair to them.

I see no problem with a mature adult who has gone under intense physiological evaluation making this decision, but this is a 6 year old we're talking about. Surely we can all agree that they are not mature enough to make that decision.

Generally I'd agree with you but apparently studies back up the notion that's it possible at such a young age for a child to have gender identity issues. I'm not in a position to question it since I don't study it.

The depression and self injurious behavior are real. Avoiding undue harm to individuals and their families by fostering inclusive environments is a good thing. The example in OP burdens the other students and being at the center of national news about such a personal topic can't be good for Coy, in the long term.
