    Is it bad to rev your engine?

    Most sources point out that it isn't, but I'd just like some clarification.
    -Me and gf sitting in car.
    -I've been driving only 5 months and I set my foot on the gas rather than break while parked.
    -It revved up to like 3k for one second.
    -Dad came out and starts screaming, saying its bad for the engine.
    -Da fuk.

    Guy can't seem to understand that its an accident, and if it were on purpose, it wouldn't do a damn thing seeing as it was like a second.

    It won't hurt anything. Unless your setting there pegging the rev limiter for an extended period of time, it won't hurt anything.

    All depends on your car. If you have a toyota with lift or a honda with v-tec its no problem. Those are made to rev over 6k, and 5k to hit their second cam. If you have a ford taurus and you're hitting 8k then you should probably ease down cause it's not made to be revving crazy high. I have a celica with lift and i hit 7k all the time. All depends on the car.

    But to answer your question it's ok to hit 3k. That's practically rolling at 25mph....

    It won't hurt the car at all. It'll just use more gas. Plus cars have rev limiters to prevent engine damage.

    I've been workin on cars since I was 15 with my dad who's a mechanic theirs nothing wrong with Reving a car for a second or too as long as it isn't held close to redline for any period of time that where major damage can occur to the drive train if u drive an automatic and constantly redlined a car ur trans would go quickly because of all the heat. If u have a rotary engine U can hold a redline for a while without damage because of the design made to be rev'd highs because the power band is high fr 5-9k and it helps clean carbon build up unlike piston engines that don't build up carbon as quickly

    rev it in neutral if anything. the rpm limiter will kick in somewhere between 3k and 4k so you dont blow up you're fukking engine. revving it at anything over 3k consistently or for prolonged periods will cause unwanted wear and tear. make sure the temp guage is at a comfortable level as well and you're all good. but in the end, just don't do it so you're not a show boating *******. didnt some guy kick in your headlight the other day anyway

    I shift at 3200 rpm. And I can bring my **** to 7k for days and throw the clutch no problem.

    Just not too good for the car..

    im talking when the car is in neutral or park. MOST cars have an rpm limiter that will keep you from going over 3k or 4k (depending on the car) while in N and P

    Depends on whether it's diesel or petrol( I'm surprised no one mentioned this :0). For a diesel 3000rpm is a lot, but I'm guessing it's a petrol. If it's petrol, it's definitely not good, but it's not bad either.

    As long as it's warm it's fine, if it's cold the sudden change in temperatures and velocity from the rev can cause knocking and warping. Prolonged engine fatigue at below operating temperatures can and will cause premature engine failure.
