When you guys say how much you can bench, do you count the bar weight in? What about leg press, do you count the rack weight in?

Yes for the bar (barbell, no one gives a **** how much you lift on the smith). No idea for the leg press (much like the smith, no one cares how much you leg press anyway).

I don't bench on the Smith Machine, but if I did I would count the bar. And I don't leg press.

what is this obsession with how much the smith bar weighs? If you are worried about the weight go hope on a bb bench.

It looks that way... but its not im pretty sure. Try to one arm curl a normal BB and then one arm curl a smith bar. I think the rollers that slide make it lighter.

As for why i want to know... cause i do? Id like to be able to go from the normal BB to a smith and use the same weight, but i cant do that untill i know how much the bar weighs.

why are you wanting to hop from a bb to the smith? Unless you are doing a neg which in case you will be doing more weight then normal anyways why else would you want to take away from developing your chest?

I think the smith bar is only 25lbs on the rollers, leg press I have no clue. I don't count the weight of the bar on a smith or leg press.

I think it depends on resistance... at the hardcore gym i go too, it is probably close to 45 pounds for smith machine, but at the college gym, it probably weighs 5 pounds. I have often wondered how much leg press weighs, but I could really care less.

the point i was trying to make was that the smith bar is lighter. NO i dont do curls on a smith... I was trying to make a point by using an example. Lets try not to read into every word i type.

My wording was fine. My example was overly analyzed. If people put in as much helpful thought as they did trying to argue this may be a helpful forum.

Lighten up, the guy got a range of answers and it's been established that it'll depend on the specific equipment used.

true but i ran in to this issue today at the y.

i was up to 275 but i did not count the weight until i could not add anymore weight. my max was highest ever at 275 if the bar weighed 15 pounds. then my wife said it was 25. if this is true then my max was actually 285 which would be sweet. either way though today was a success, and i have found over the years that the smith is definately the way to go on bench, but not for squats.

The sled that is mounted on a guide rails at a 45 degree angle. Its not the same as moving 150 pounds free weight. Which is why kids that would get pinned by a legit 275 squat can still grind out 20 reps with 7 plates on each side and think that means something.

You benching 275 on the smith machine is equivalent to me bragging about pushing 350 lb on the incline bench machine. Any smith machine exercise holds no merit when it comes to powerlifting. I do admit the smith machine is somewhat useful when it comes to bodybuilding but not necessarily a lift where you gauge your bench strength upon.

we have a Magnum brand machine at our gym as one of the smith machines. its counter weighted at 26lbs. its the only specs I have seen on one.
as for leg press put a scale under your feet empty and see? the two big machines (nebula & Kell) are 100lb head and the other 122lb. our kell is a hack squat where you lay flat to the ground and brace with your shoulders
