I'm sure everyone recognizes these 3 competitors
The guy in the middle is the most 'aesthetic' (hate using that word) and he's also Mr O. I've seen too much talk of how the days of the mass monsters are over and smaller more aesthetic competitors are the way of the future, just because the current mr o is 'aesthetic'.
These types of physiques will attract a larger audience and bodybuilding is a business so thats what the ifbb wants, HOWEVER... the new category called mens physique already has that covered
I see phil lasting as Mr O for a few more years, but i believe (and hope) that the huge freaks of the 90s and early 2000s will return, as the aesthetic pleasing to look at side of the ifbb is being taken care of by the mens physique guys and even the 212 guys, its would be stupid to narrow the gap between all those different categories as this will mean less diversity, and wow factor.
Post your opinions on where you think the Mr O is heading below, and where you want it to go.

its bodybuilding not beach bodybuilding. I hope the that these athletes keep pushing the sport to the max and don't tone it down for the sake of publicity. i really doubt the ifbb will want these guys to tone it down either. they realize its a niche sport and i think while there will be ebbs and flows as to what type of physique wins, there is no doubt to me that the ifbb will still want these guys looking big and freaky.

I've never understood all of these terms people make up.
Phil is not Mr. Olympia 3 years straight because of his "aesthetics"
To use your expression, Phil is a "mass monster", even though he's has a small frame.
He packs the most muscle "mass" on his frame whilst bringing in sublime conditioning, symmetry and proportions compared to his competitors.
That's all there is to it.

I think it will just continue on...don't see guys like Cutler, Kai, Ronnie, Ramy and Dorian size being the average norm ever...these guys (mass monsters) are like few and far between per era and always will be.
I think the sport will just continue to see guys compete in the 240-265 range with a few above every so often.THE LEVRONE 2016 MR. OLYMPIA COMEBACK

I still have yet to learn how they are even judged? What separates one from the other? I agree with you 100%. Maybe they will turn it into a reality show like next best model or whatever for men's fitness...but don't see it lasting...there is nothing at all tangible about that contest. At least with actual bodybuilding you have size, symmetry, condition, flow et. to go on.

I'm saying because Phil isn't the biggest on stage people think Mr o will become more about aesthetics (hate that word so much)
I'm saying they're wrong as other classes meet that need and I think that creates a need for freakier bodybuilders that in a few years will make Phil look small and flabby (exaggerating to make a point)

When Dexter won the Mr. O. there was lots of talk about the "new direction of bodybuilding" and the end of the mass monsters. That lasted all of one year, and then another mass guy took the crown again.
Yes, Phil has won it 3 times but those first two were very close victories for him. I don't think he dominates the sport the way that Yates or Ronnie or even Jay did.
Mass is still popular and will still win/do well in competitions. Instead of looking at just the first place finisher, look at the top 3.

Agree. The ideal weight for an average height( 5'8- 5'11) bb is 240-260.Over that and you look like **** when relaxed.Below 240 and you'll be like the 212 guys...People dont like mass monsters.Proof: flex wheeler or shawn ray are clearly the most popular bb of the 90s despite Dorian dominating the mr O...It's good to be freaky, but i prefer freaky shape and simmetry to freaky size, and so do vast majority of people.

Just because Phil appears the 'most aesthetic' to some does not mean that is why he is Mr O nor an indication of the direction bodybuilding is heading. He just meets the judging criteria in the judges eyes on the day more so than the other competitors. If someone else came in as complete, as shredded but much larger and not necessarily as 'aesthetic' they would win instead or so I should think so.
I think that's a mistake some often make when a perhaps smaller athlete wins the Mr O. They see it as a shift in the direction of bodybuilding when in actuality the smaller athlete simply met more of the criteria on that day (Jay was lacking conditioning when Dex won etc.)

It's not.
Steve cook and to an extent, Jeff seid are by far the most popular ifbb men's physique competitors and neither placed (IMO steve actually had the best physique there)
There was some issues around the winner being related to muscular developments owner or some chit but it's no doubt in my mind that the placing wasn't all above board.
