Because preworkouts supps are *way* more than just coffee, and the effect is way more than simply having a cup of coffee, at least for me it is. Coffee doesn't make me feel anything close to like what a preworkout supplement makes me feel like. That beings said, coffee has antioxidants and stuff that some preworkouts supplements don't have.
edit - anyways, I'm sure some do and some don't, just like everyone is saying. Why wouldn't you at least try it every once in a while if you're getting it for free?

Have you ever legitimately chugged a cup or two of coffee? Have you ever actually looked at the ingredients in a preworkout? Most of the stimulant base is purely caffeine. Most of the actual efficacious supplements in preworkouts are underdosed and could be bought in bulk for way cheaper and actually dosed properly.

tried that once. i hit 540 on the shoulder press for reps; the next day i found out i obliterated both my rotator cuffs. would not recommend it.
