I thought it was a joke too. I hadn't read the news today until just now. I had seen a story a few days ago about that other meteor that was supposed to almost hit us. It's crazy how something so small (150 feet across) could have hit with a 2.5 megaton force. That would have been a disaster in a populated area like where this one was.

I thought meteors just exploded when they hit the ground. It's scary how this one entered the atmosphere and exploded while it was in the air. It would be like an air burst nuclear detonation if a bigger one did that.

They cool off so fast once they hit the lower atmosphere they detonate in air. I attached a link to the 1908 Tunguska blast, similar thing only much larger.

There's a massive one passing quite close to the earth,that is inside the orbit of some satellites.The news states i'll be able to see it through a good pair
of binoculars in the Southern sky,at 19.35 gmt here in the UK.If this one hit us,there'd be no more petty arguments on this forum,or anywhere else for
that matter.

I was watching something on TV the other day, some of these asteriods/comets/meteors have their own moons that travel with them. How do you top that act?

That's the one I was thinking of. It's not big enough to kill everyone, but it would have the effect of a large hydrogen bomb if it hit. That would be the worst natural disaster in human history if it happened in a populated area.

Great video find, CB. Amazing, exciting, but terrifying. In the past 10 years we have seen what tsunamis can really do and now what meteors can do.

I heard the meteor was about 11 tons and traveling at about 37,000 miles per hour. Just the kinetic energy without explosives can be catastrophic.

I was reading earlier that the size was estimated to be comparable to a bus yet it weighed 7,000 tons..not lbs but tons. And it was cruising at 40,000 mph which is just insane to even comprehend.
