Not too much, unnecessary - yes.
I normally do between 16-24 sets. Biceps or triceps don't need 20 sets.. I usually hit them in isolation for about 4-8 sets. They get work though pulling movements and pressing movements respectively.Elite Powerlifter

If you can do that many sets you need to up the weight.
“You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth than go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers sayin’, you ain’t where you wanna be because of him or her or anybody!"

too much imo. I personally wouldn't do more than 6 sets for bis and 9 for tris, maybe a little higher

20-30 sets is absolutely too much. Especially for a small muscle group like the biceps or triceps.
For comparison, I'll hit 6-10 sets of biceps and triceps each.

Cable pushdowns or dipsx2
incline curlx3
hammer curlsx3
machine curlsx2
By the end of that, my arms are pretty burned out. OP, sounds like you were going way too light. Up the weight.Last edited by Lastman13; 02-14-2013 at 08:15 PM.

I seriously only do like 9-10 working sets for every muscle group, and sometimes even less. Sometime's I'll just focus on 5x5 compounds and call it good for the day. Less is more as long as you take full advantage of the sets you're doing via progression overload imo.
