I was a novice to supplements a year ago... lifted for like 3 years w/out them, but when I tried Up Your Mass (4 tubs) I didn't gain much as I did without any mass gainer after that. I gained some solid muscle tho.
Don't replace whole meals is the best advice I can give, I think I overlooked that and didn't have enough (though I still had 3 full meals) Idk.

I love Up Your Mass and use it every day between my workout session and work. I am pretty depleted after my workout and it gets me through the couple hours necessary until I am able to eat something solid. I wish they had more flavors though.

Up your mass is by far my favorite, good carb source(not malto like many others) and the soy protein thing means nothing to me. I used it once during the day and always post w/o. Im currently using universal real gains and its not even close to up your mass, thin, tastes not so great. I actually look forward to an up your mass shake, fudge brownie is the s**t. cant wait to finish the real gains and get back to mhp.
