US can't compete with China and some of the other Asian countries in labor costs whether at $7 or $9.

The hope is the infrastructure of the manufacturing companies is advanced enough (robots, lowered energy costs) that even with higher wages to supervise the machinery, it will be cheaper than bringing goods in from Asia.

Higher quality of life based on what meter? If you take no initiative to gain skills or get a job, I fully support you in your decision to be miserable.

As someone who works in manufacturing, hopefully, not for long. Sure, let them have the easy ****, but if companies continue to invest in highly automated manufacturing system in the US, it will be cheaper to produce and distribute more advanced goods straight from here. Shipping costs trans-ocean are huge, and there's this small issue of Chinese companies stealing designs (actually, in many cases, given).

Edit: It's also not just labor costs that make Chinese goods cheaper. They subsidize their domestic companies. We have to go through Chinese partners to acquire goods, because those bastards try to charge us twice or three times as much for the same damn components.

    $1 an hour,

That amounts to $480 a month

    Australia is $15 an hour

    UK is almost $10

So we need to pay workers less so the CEO's can continue to make billions?

That is why it generally supports a smaller government that does not have the power to aid these big companies.

Minimum wages actually have the effect of increasing unemployment (especially for black people) and suppressing wages overall.

Capitalism doesn't restrict anything, it's the government which creates the barriers to entry through onerous laws and regulations, many of which are written by the corporations and given to politicians to pass by the way. By the way, a system in which the government doles out favors to a a select few corporations at the expense of others isn't Capitalism, it's a Mercantilism. And Capitalism was actually originated as an attack on Mercantilism.

That's not a valuble skill. Anyone can do that. You can even train monkeys to do that.

Wish we were more free-market. The government's welfare programs are horrendous. There are many transparent, private charities I would rather give my money to.

its not about how much. Birdy said capitalism rewards hard work. A career doorman regardless of hard work will have a small chance at an interview when his résumé says 2000-present opening doors, signing for mail. Capitalism reward some and screws other regardless of effort. And for the record I 100% support capitalism but lets not make it out to be a saint when it's not. You can't have capitalism without someone getting the shaft, so because of people getting the shaft we have all the social programs to fill the cap, aka the American welfare state is the by product of people getting the shaft in a capitalist economy

Brb working hard to qualify for a job as a door-man.

Already am. I've qualified since I was old enough to learn how to open a door.
