Has anyone here done the ISSA certifications? I am currently almost finished a 6 month course in my home country but I feel the nutrition side is rather lacking while the exercise instruction/business side is very well covered.
I have been looking at issaonline (I can't post links but google it) distance learning and I am interested in the nutrition certs. Are these actually worth doing? Did you learn something from them? Also is sports nutrition better than the fitness nutrition cert?

To sum it all up ISSA is great. Do some searching there is a ton of information about ISSA and other great schools you can go to. With the more courses you do the more repetitive it becomes because it is a lot of the same information over and over but ISSA is great, they will help you out with any and all problems and give you every single tool you need to become certified. I can't attest for other schools or certs.

Thanks. That was what I wanted to hear. So, how was the certification for ISSA? If I remember right, I was really surprised by the ACE exam when I took it. Far more anatomy, and far less exercise prescription than I anticipated. I passed the exam, but didn't do as well as I expected, since I studied more of what I thought would be on the exam.

Hi All,
I have several certs, ones I have with ISSA are SPN (Now SSN) SSC, CFT and I had the SMAC which is no longer available. THe SSN is more for athletes but it dose cover the general pop as well. the SFN is less sports more general pop in nature. My personal choice in a cert would be ACSM. The only real downside side is that ISSA is not NCCA, the reason being you have to buy the material to take the test. so you cant buy the text book, study, then schedual the test. The downside is a lot of the bigger gym chains wont accept a cert that isnt NCCA. Thats not a big deal if you are planning to open your own gym or go it on your own.
Just remember the cert is just a stepping stone. Its what you know and what you are able to apply to your craft.Twitter: @GladConjugate

ISSA is very well versed. They cover a plethera of topics and not particularly any one subject over another. They really want to ensure that their future ISSA trainers will represent them well. Again, I cannot attest for any of the other certifications but from what I have read on here and other sites ISSA is one of the best if you plan on working for yourself. Hell, they even give you a free website to use if you choose. Along with business cards, video demos and just about anything you can think of to help market yourself. I would I highly recommend them to anyone.

So in my opinion if you want to give nutrition advice you need to go through accredited colleges. Since it is a health care field there are strict regulations in most states. If you live in a state with no regulation for nutrition information then I think a nutrition certification is great. However, that being said, it would be a waste of money to pay for information you can't really express fully to clients. ISSA is a great program and I learned a LOT. For an experience trainee there's a lot of stuff you will already know. If you have any background in anatomy it also really helps put things into perspective.
